Reported heavy damage as German air raids strike Liverpool amid a broader naval clash in the Channel. British forces sweep the Mediterranean to deny Italian advances while Greek forces push Italians back despite Italian air force efforts.
British forces claim sea control after Mediterranean clashes and English channel battles. Italy and Germany dispute results, with claims of heavy British damage to German ships and Italian losses. Amid Balkan front shifts Greeks capture Pogradetz in Albania.
Chairman Dies of the House Committee on Un American Activities said after conferring with President Roosevelt he would persist with exposing subversive elements. He declined details of the talks but asserted no change to his program. He noted no plans to confer with Attorney General Jackson about curbing subversive activities or detecting fifth column agents.
The Senate fast tracked Admiral William D. Leahy’s appointment as ambassador to France with unanimous consent. Senator Vandenberg blocked a separate move to confirm J Warren Madden to the U S Claims Court. Senator Ashurst reported 84 senators urged Roosevelt to appoint him to the claims court, though Madden was chosen for swift confirmation.

Reports mention possible Japanese and Chinese officials and foreign journalists aboard, though authorities deny such passengers.
A coroner's jury in Albuquerque ruled that 32 year old Charles Billings of Wisconsin killed himself with a shotgun late yesterday. Ill health barred him from military service and his mother Bettie Gustafson said he brooded over not being called to serve.
German merchantmen Idarwald and Rhein left Tampico in a second attempt to run the British blockade for Europe. Reports say British and Canadian ships in the Caribbean may intercept, with U S neutrality craft nearby. The Durango was cited as escort. both ships carried limited fuel and provisions and fulfilled Mexican clearance.
The British Mediterranean blockade has cut off vital foodstuffs and agricultural raw materials to Italy, the Agriculture Department reports. With gates barred at Gibraltar, Italy faces a hard winter deprived of essentials.
President Roosevelt told reporters he might use the airplane for the first time in eight years if away from Washington and an emergency required a 12 hour return. He planned a trip next week but would not specify the destination. He said the plane would be used only if necessary and denied Mexico as a possible stop for Camacho's inauguration.
President Roosevelt said he had referred to the defense commission the problem of speeding up work on new destroyers. He said consideration was being given to eliminating machine tool bottlenecks. He expressed overall satisfaction with the defense program but noted some dissatisfaction with unnamed details.
In Mexico City on November 29 Henry A Wallace presented credentials as special ambassador amid a hostile crowd shouting Viva Almanzan and Down With Wallace. Police arrested 18 demonstrators after stones were thrown at the U S embassy. tear gas dispersed the crowd. Wallace later attended credentialing at the presidential palace with other ambassadors as police beefed up security around the embassy.
In Toppenish Washington a warehouse business building was rocked by a gas explosion sparked by an unseen spark. Seven bodies were recovered and an eighth was feared entombed as rescuers searched the ruins. Fourteen people were injured and Fire Chief Leo Henle urged an immediate inquiry, with Mayor E L Bennett promising investigation.
James J. Morrison was held by postal inspectors in Los Angeles on an indictment from Santa Fe federal court charging mail fraud in selling New Mexico oil leases. Inspector E D Chace said others named in the indictment were convicted or pled guilty or entered nolo contendere.
Roswell prepares for Santa Claus arrival at 1 PM on Sixth and Main. Meteorologist Cleve Hallenbeck predicts good weather for the event as a large crowd gathers from up to a hundred miles away. Children must be in cars to receive gifts as the municipal Christmas tree is lit and a long Main Street parade forms.
The treasury reports Britain spent 315.749 million dollars of its American capital to buy war supplies in the first year of the war and still has at least 385.719 million in cash deposits in American banks. More than four billion dollars worth was shipped to the United States, mostly British owned. The report could influence senatorial surveys on Britain's remaining US assets before any broader financial aid decisions.
The body of Ralph W. Cunningham 40 of Los Angeles who died yesterday from injuries in an automobile crash near Hollywood New Mexico will be sent tonight by train to Dumont Iowa for funeral services Sunday and burial beside his father. Accompanied by his mother the body was handled by Ballard Funeral Home. Two others injured are recovering at St Marys hospital.
President Roosevelt told reporters he would look with disfavor on a sales tax to raise more revenue for the defense program. The remark came during a press conference after a supper meeting with seven members of Congress.
NEW ORLEANS Nov 29 The American Federation of Labor reaffirmed its endorsement of a 6 hour day and 30 hour week without pay or standard reductions but urged no immediate move to cut the 40 hour week. The convention vowed to guard current wages and standards and to oppose encroachment on the 40 hour week amid defense needs. President William Green won a 17th term, pledging to seek labor peace. CIO power balance with John L. Lewis remains a barrier. Seattle chosen as next year’s meeting site.
The Pecos Grazing District No. 6 election will name three advisory board members at 1 30 tomorrow afternoon in the district courtroom. Sheep seats go to Lea and Lincoln counties and a cattle seat to Eddy county. All licensees are urged to vote, says district grazier Carl Welch.
Italian sources say the Greek push into Albania has stopped and Fascist forces prepare a counteroffensive. Mussolini named General Alfredo Guzzoni as assistant in the war ministry in a broader military shake up aimed at reversing the month old Greek campaign. Pogradetz taken signals cautious Greek reports on Italian losses and booty.
Santa Fe announces a brief deer season for December 20 through 22 limited to 40 antlerless permits. Hunters must not have drawn a buck in the regular season and pay $2 plus a big game license. Applications open until 10 am December 11 with Ellicott Barker in charge.
Western Reserve University of Cleveland appears to be on the inside track for a bid to play Arizona State College at Tempe on New Year’s Day. Sun Bowl selection chair Dr. Bob Homan Jr planned talks with Tempe officials late today to determine Tempe’s preferred opponent while Homan indicated support for the Cleveland school.
Don Blevins was arrested at his home on a charge of stealing a calf from Sonny Hancock and Mable Hancock on November 25. The complaint in Pat ONeills J P court was signed by cattle inspector A B Miller. Blevins has not yet been arraigned.
Mrs. Annie Hendricks receives permits to remodel and reroof at 415 East 4th Street with a project value of 300 dollars.
G S Oettle spoke at the Lions dinner in Roswell recounting life in South Africa birthplace and career with the South African railway. He described natives ceremonies local wildlife and modern conveniences. a toy project plan and anti sabotage efforts were discussed and toys will be delivered to underprivileged children.
The Roswell Lions Club appeals for public support for Stocking Day tomorrow to raise funds for toys for underprivileged children at Christmas. Toys will be sold as Christmas stockings by the Pals Society girls at Roswell High School. Every donation is greatly appreciated.
Arizona New Mexico and West Texas see fair weather with scattered high clouds tonight and Saturday with little temperature change. Colorado mostly fair tonight and Saturday with warmer southeast portion. Extended forecast through Wednesday shows above normal temperatures and little or no precipitation across Arizona New Mexico and West Texas.
J. B. Savage R. H. Carter D. N. Pope and P. V. Thorson will drive to Portales tonight for a meeting of the Eastern New Mexico Area Boy Scout Council executive board called by president Donald MacKay. Other Roswell directors H. E. Samson Oscar Greene and F. L. Austin may not attend.
New Mexico Military Institute celebrated homecoming with the cadet polo team defeating the Bronco grnsters. 378 out-of-town alumni and patrons signed the visitor register at headquarters. A turkey dinner fed 1150 cadets faculty and guests, a horse show preceded a dance at Cahoon Armory, and 1815 pounds of turkey were served.
J W Patterson and Catherine Moran Woolsey both of Carlsbad. Urbano Carillo and Rosa Leyba both of Roswell. John Thomas Awalt of Artesia and Mildred Marie Holland of Roswell obtained marriage licenses.
