Hon. Herbert Hagerman arrives from Washington to be greeted by hundreds in Roswell and Pecos Valley communities. He vows a Straightforward, honest administration, supports Carlsbad Irrigation Project, and ends gambling in Roswell. A guard of honor, militia, and a military band greet him atop the Hagerman special. He speaks of unity across parties and regions as he prepares to take office January 22.
The cane of Night Marshal Witt, lost after an assault near the bridge on the fair ground road, was recovered today at the corner of Second Street and Main by John Kelly, fire chief. It was buried in mud near the crossing, suggesting the assailants may have taken it to town and discarded it.
The movement for statehood to admit New Mexico and Arizona is intensifying in Washington. Petitions will be presented in both houses by the New Mexico Non-partisan Joint Statehood League, led by former Delegate Bernard Rodey. Rodey and allies plan winter visits to push the bill, with Senator Beveridge ready to sponsor the joint measure to clear it from urgent business.
Rev H F Vermillion of Roswell was elected president of the New Mexico Baptist Association at Alamogordo along with Sloat of Alamogordo as recording secretary and H Brewer of Phoenix as corresponding secretary. The group, about forty messengers strong, reported mission offerings up 25 percent and church additions rising. The New Mexico Baptist College trustees offered the institution to the Association without debt, and it and its future oversight move under the Association.
A three year old girl and Mrs. J. H. McKinstry died after diphtheria. The family quarantined on South McKinstry as the illness spread. Thanksgiving services will be held at local churches with Union arrangements and sermons by Rev. Twitty. Service times are 10:30 and 11:30 with broad church participation.
Nine men perish including the Matafia engineering crew when the Duluth shipwreck at the mouth of the harbor claims the entire forward section. Fifteen were saved after lifeboat rescue attempts, as cold weather and heavy seas hampered recovery through the night. Names listed include William Most chief engineer and Claude Farringer second engineer among the dead.
Several buildings at the U S proving ground at Sandy Hook were destroyed by fire this morning. The machine shop carpenter shop plumbing shop paint shop and blacksmith shop were burned. The cause is unknown.
Miss Margaret Patterson hosted six young ladies at her sister Mrs Carr’s North Hill home yesterday afternoon. The guests included Patterson McCain Campbell Fort and Orle. After a three course luncheon a pumpkin centerpiece hid a collection of gifts for the bride to be, making the event a pleasant occasion.
Charles J Weberg, an experienced blacksmith, runs a shop at 209 West 4th Street offering repairing of wagons, buggies, and general metalwork with guaranteed quality. Also notice of Thanksgiving big turkey dinner at the Shelby Tomorrow and dine at the White Cafe.
