Len Chaney Tom Hoover Jack Madison and other Roswell Optimist Club members cut 160 trees over a half mile to a waiting truck for sale on North Main. Optimists praised the effort and promised careful attention on each tree.
Weather updates report heavy snow showers stretching from Ruidoso to the Sierra Blanca Ski Area with rapid accumulation, a light ground cover within minutes after starting about 9 15 a.m., while Carrizozo and other Lincoln County spots report no snow yet.
Lincoln reports two hunting incidents where dogs triggered fatal or injurious shotgun blasts. A loaded shotgun in a pickup was discharged when a dog stepped on the trigger, injuring a 13 year old hunter in the elbow. In another case a hunter’s shotgun on the ground fired as his dog jumped, injuring the man in the foot.
In Memphis a 5 year old quarterhorse named Kitty Hawk blocked both a passenger train and a 100 car freight train. Paula Roberts 15 led her across a trestle when the horse wedged between ties. Deputies and bystanders freed the animal after about two hours with belts and a tree strap. Kitty Hawk escaped unharmed.
In Lisbon and surrounding villages floods from weekend rains killed hundreds and left thousands homeless. Rescue workers found mud caked bodies in Lisbon suburbs like Odivelas and in Quintas, with 250 dead expected and the toll rising.
The colors of Walker Air Force Base will be retired this afternoon at 4 39 p m in a ceremony at the former air base. They will be presented to Lt Col John H Denton who will forward them to Davis Monthan AFB Arizona where Walker personnel will form a detachment. Roswell Campus of Eastern New Mexico University will raise the colors Tuesday morning at 8 a m. The public is invited to attend both ceremonies.
President Charles de Gaulle repeated that Britain cannot join the European Common Market and warned that its pound devaluation could push the world monetary system toward a gold standard. He urged stronger European ties and proposed associate status for Britain, while opposing market dissolution.

U S special envoy Cyrus R Vance returned to Ankara with Greece's answer to Turkish demands over Cyprus amid tense troop buildup. Officials say Turkey will likely reject the Greek terms while NATO and other diplomats urge de escalation and negotiated guarantees.
Deaths on the nation's streets and highways rose to 651 Sunday night during the final hours of the Thanksgiving weekend. Travelors on homeward journeys clogged roads as the toll lagged behind last year’s record of 748. The count ran from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday.
William E Glenn 40, Roswell businessman and owner of Glenns Furniture Store, died after his five ton tractor trailer overturned on State Road No 6 southeast of Belew. His wife Gloria 29 was injured and hospitalized in Belén. He served in World War II and was active in NATESA. Survived by wife, parents, one son and five daughters with several siblings. Services pending at Ballard Funeral Home.
