Congress Rejects Adjournment In 191 to 148 Vote

Washington reports an election year session with 191 voting against adjournment and 148 for it. The move promises a lengthy stretch into Christmas, as both chambers previously held scant sessions. The Ramspeck civil service bill also won Senate approval amid the adjournment fight.

Winners o More Beautiful Dexter Contest Announced

The Dexter Woman's Club announced awards for the More Beautiful Dexter and Community Contest. Prizes range from $2.50 to $5 for categories including best planting of a place, evergreen display, flowering show, backyard improvement, initial planting effort, best kept lawn, parkways, and late flowers. The club will sponsor the contest again next year and urges community improvements.

Fire Found On Battleship South Dakota

A fire aboard the battleship South Dakota at the New York Shipbuilding Company yard in Camden New Jersey was quickly controlled. Three workmen were reported missing in dense smoke while at least seven others were overcome by fumes. Two alarms were sounded and some were hospitalized, though no serious injuries were noted. The blaze started in debris and rubber hose in the hull section, but yard officials downplayed damage despite heavy smoke.

Zusman's Suspended Sentence in Junk Purchases Case

Sam Zusman was found guilty by Judge James B. McGhee of failing to keep proper records in his junk business. He received a 90 day jail term and a $300 fine both suspended. Zusman has been jailed since June 27 awaiting trial and faces additional charges of uttering three worthless checks. Trial date for those charges not set. Turner Trial Today on False Pretenses Charge In Roswell cattle case O B Turner faces a jury for obtaining money under false pretenses. He allegedly bought 27 head of cattle from Roswell Livestock Sales and drafted $725.07 on Kansas City firm to pay, then diverted and resold cattle through Clovis. Draft not paid as cattle did not arrive. Turner was arrested in Alamosa and brought to Roswell. A charge against Gabrella Dalgada for assault with a deadly weapon was dismissed.

Thanksgiving At St. Andrews Church Service

The Thanksgiving Service at St. Andrews Episcopal Church will be held Wednesday at seven led by the St. Andrews Choir directed by Mrs. C W Grier with Junior Choir. An offering of foodstuffs will be distributed to city residents in need on Thanksgiving Day. A social gathering follows in the Parish Hall and a Holy Communion is celebrated on Thanksgiving Day at ten. Visitors are welcome.

CHICAGO November 19 A Chairman Martin Dies announced he was sending seven agents of his congressional committee on un American activities to four cities immediately to seize records of what he described as German and Communist organizations. He said the agents half of his staff were dispatched to Detroit two cities in the east and one in the south. He declined to identify the three cities other than Detroit. First Men From Chaves County Report For Fort Bliss

Walter Frederick Eberhart 22 and William Ernest Shockley 18 reported for the selective service training at Fort Bliss El Paso Texas. They volunteered for one year of training and service with the local board at Roswell guiding the deployment. Eberhart's order number V 196 and Shockley's V 3017 designate their volunteer status.

Civic Orchestra To Be Organized In Roswell Meeting

A Roswell civic orchestra will be organized at a meeting tomorrow night at 7 o'clock in the junior high school band rooms. All interested are urged to come and bring instruments. There will be no charge. The purpose is to unite musicians to form an orchestra for playing at public affairs.

Questionnaires To Be Sent Friday By Local Board

The next batch of questionnaires will be mailed by the local selective service board on Friday. No questionnaires have been mailed since last Friday when men with order numbers 211 to 260 were contacted. The Record will print the names of those receiving questionnaires on the mailing day.

Roswell Boy Jack Garrett Recovering From Wound

Jack Garrett, a Roswell boy, is improving at St Marys hospital after a shoulder wound from an accidental gun discharge during a hunting trip. He is expected to be discharged home Wednesday or Thursday.

Lions Club Toy Drive Saturday

The Lions Club toy drive takes place next Saturday November 23 with a larger list of children to aid. Roswell residents are urged to gather old toys from home and leave them on porches early Saturday morning for collection by the Boy Scouts, with firemen handling repair and painting.

Roswell Cubs honored members at a meeting last night with Hume Garrett receiving a Bear badge, Howard Stockton earning a Silver Arrow for Wolf rank and Bear badge plus Gold Arrow for Bear rank, Lynn Mayer and Hugh Huff earning Wolf badges, Joe De Voss and Charles Joyce receiving Bobcat badges. Forty Boys Enroll in Temporary Scout Troop

Forty boys enrolled last night in a temporary Boy Scout troop formed to advance to Tenderfoot rank then join permanent city troops as Second Class Scouts. Another meeting is Friday at 7 pm at Junior High School. Stig Santheson is Scoutmaster.

1500 Garments Shipped From Here To English Refugees

Roswell Salvation Army commander Capt. John Gioscio announced that over 1500 usable garments were donated for English war refugees. About 1000 pounds of clothing were loaded for freight to Albuquerque, then to New York for shipment to England, expected around December 3. The local committee was chaired by Mrs. John B. Beers with Mrs. L. O. Fulien and Mrs. C. E. Mason assisting.
