First Men Report From Chaves County For Induction

Six men from Chaves County will report Wednesday morning November 20 at Fort Bliss Texas for a year of training and service in the Army. The local board had not yet announced the selected men at press time. New Mexico prepares its first draftees with 140 in the quota. 84 inducted in Santa Fe and the rest at Fort Bliss.

Mussolini vows war through Greece and Britain annihilation

Premier Mussolini declared the European war must continue until England is annihilated and Italy must make severe sacrifices. He claimed Italy has a million under arms and could mobilize eight million more, praised mass production of aircraft, and stressed a deepening Axis partnership with Germany amid losses in the Greek campaign and the Taranto raid.

Large Attendance Expected At Roswell Masons Past Masters Night

Roswell Lodge No. 18 A F and A M anticipates a large turnout for Past Masters Night with H L McCune of El Paso set to deliver the main address. A steak dinner at 6 30 p m adds to the appeal as nearly all local lodges have indicated plans to attend. Merchants Dinner to Hear Fair Report and Financials

Business and professional men are urged to reserve for the Merchants Association dinner at 6 30 tomorrow at Nickson Coffee Shop. The event welcomes all, with a 75 cent ticket, and a full report on the 1940 Eastern New Mexico State Fair plus a detailed financial statement will be presented by directors. Red Cross Roll Call Reaches 1800 By Noon In Roswell

The Red Cross drive in Roswell reached 1800 dollars by noon today with some reports still to come in. County roll call chairman W C Lawrence urged adding fifty members to hit the 2000 target by Wednesday evening. Many businesses, schools, and offices reported full participation. Junior Red Cross will run the first week in December under Miss Irene Swann.

Capitol Roof Declared Dangerous for House and Senate

Congress learned the 85-year-old Capitol roofs over the chambers are dangerous and could cave in under heavy snow. Mrs. Mabel Ann Thompson wife of James A. Thompson died here today after months of illness. Born May 6 1901 in Mt Vernon Indiana she was thirty nine. Fires Burn Bales at Roswell Cotton Oil Co

Firemen made three runs Sunday including a blaze in cotton linters at the Roswell Cotton Oil Co on East Second Street. About 25 to 30 bales burned but had little value. A second call to the Christian Church found old screen doors scorched and smoke in the basement with no damage. A grass fire at 705 North Washington was extinguished with no damage.

Army Spending Tops California War Material Outlays

Washington reports that since July 1 California led in army war material expenditures totaling $514,829,677, about 18.6 percent of $2,758,243,197 across states. Aircraft purchases drive the California total while seven western states received no contracts and Texas earned $8,613,901.

Advertising Club Drives Tomorrow For Santa Claus Day

Mescalero Road Job Nearing Completion

Work on U S 70 in the Mescalero reservation advances toward completion as the Roswell Chamber of Commerce highway committee expects surfacing contracts to be let this month. Paving continues on US 380 between Bronco and Plains, Texas, closing the last unpaved gap, with hope final Roswell to Santa Fe blacktopping finishes soon.

Not Guilty In Larceny Case In District Court

J. D. Hassler was found not guilty of a larceny charge by a district court jury shortly after two this afternoon in the November term presided by Judge James B. McGhee. Sam Zusman’s trial for failing to keep proper records of junk continued this afternoon. Charges against Brownie Mills for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery were dismissed.

Chamber of Commerce to tour entertainments in SE New Mexico

The Roswell Chamber of Commerce community entertainment committee plans a winter program touring fifteen southeastern New Mexico communities. 40 Foot White Fir Tree Placed On Main Street Roswell

A 40 foot white fir tree was installed today on Main Street between 4th and 5th in Roswell. The tree, placed in a 3 1/2 foot deep hole, was sourced from Copeland Canyon in the Capitan mountains via Lincoln National Forest officials. Forest ranger Hacklemen helped select and load it, with city manager Clyde Fulton and crew delivering it yesterday. Decorations start this afternoon as the city aids the Advertising Club in district Christmas beautification ahead of Santa Claus Day on November 30.
