The 1940 presidential race closes amid rival victory claims and last minute appeals. Roosevelt and Willkie marshal final broadcasts and speeches as they bid voters to participate tomorrow, with Roosevelt to speak from Hyde Park after 11 p.m. and Wallace delivering a closing address.
Washington reports local selective service boards start this week on picking 800000 physically fit men for a year of army training. Initial quota is 30000 to report between November 18 and December 1, with induction centers awaiting the rookies for oath and uniform. By next June 15 the entire 800000 expected in camp.
George Davisson, a former Roswell and Pecos Valley resident, died while en route to Eastland Texas after a spell in Oklahoma City. He left Hagerman then Roswell, served as Chaves county treasurer, and once ran as Democratic candidate for state land commissioner. He is survived by his wife a son George Jr and a daughter Mrs A J Parker of Eastland.
Willis Ford the Democratic county chairman predicted Roosevelt would carry the county by 1000 votes. Ross L. Malone of the Willkie club said the Willkie vote would be close but the county is safely in the Willkie column. Frank Wortman, Republican chairman, declined to predict. Ford forecast a county majority of 2500 to 4000 for Governor Miles and 1000 for Sen Chavez and Clinton P. Anderson, with the Democratic ticket winning broadly. a record vote is expected. Republican and Democratic tickets listed. no Chaves county candidates.
Bill Johnson and J R Allison each pleaded guilty in police court to drunk driving and were fined 150 dollars each. Ignacio Rodriguez and L H Oldaker pleaded not guilty and their trials were set for this afternoon. Melvin Gray was fined 50 dollars for accompanying a drunk driver. Epi S Guile was fined 10 dollars in J P Court for driving without a license.
Santa Fe Nov 4 Requisition papers were issued for the return of Elmer Cravens charged in Chaves county with kidnapping seven year old James Edward Martin Cravens was reported in custody in Le Flore County Oklahoma The kidnap charge was signed by William H Martin father of the child Authorities say the father left the child with the grandfather and Cravens took the boy with the grandfather s consent but out of state
New Mexico voters face a closing election night in Albuquerque with a Democratic all candidate rally led by Governor Miles and Senator Chavez alongside Anderson and Hatch. Republicans wrap up with an 8 p.m. KOB radio round table after a final rally in Albuquerque and appearances in McKinley and Valencia. Observers foresee a possible record turnout and a split national ticket may emerge.
Three people died in New Mexico highway crashes over the weekend. Corrie Byrum, 22, of Silver City, was fatally injured when her father’s car slid into a ditch twelve miles west of Silver City. Claude Byrum, her father, had minor injuries. Dolores Mirabal, nine, of Pueblitos, was killed when struck by a vehicle on a highway south of Belen. Benigno Moya, 44, died in a Santa Fe hospital Sunday from injuries after a truck strike Saturday night.
Santa Fe Nov 4 John Emmons republican state chairman charged a widespread movement to disfranchise hundreds of New Mexico voters by shuffling registration lists He urged voters to carry triplicate registration certificates to tomorrow's general election citing reports from Socorro San Miguel Rio Arriba McKinley Quay and Sierra counties of attempts to bar many from polling on misplaced certificate grounds
Marin Harris and Willie Jones, colored, were taken to the penitentiary today. Harris received a sentence of one to four years for forgery. Jones was sentenced to three to five years for breaking and entering under the habitual criminal act.
President Roosevelt returned to Hyde Park New York from Washington for a final five speech tour in the Hudson valley birthplace and for a national radio address at 11 10 p m EST He planned a program similar to his 1936 finale driving along the Hudson with informal remarks along the route indicating a quiet close to a long campaign
In New Mexico the attorney general states that party registration affects only the primary. A qualified voter may vote for any party or candidate in the general election regardless of stated party affiliation. Filo M. Sedillo signs the official declaration.
Local boards under the Selective Service Law may accept voluntary enlistments for a one year period from men aged 18 to 36. A government booklet notes consent rules for those under 21, with allowances when parental consent is unavailable. The Chaves County board filled assigning order numbers from the national lottery master list, with Reed Mulkey stating questionnaires may go out later this week.

Be len Masonic Lodge will officiate at memorial services in Albuquerque this afternoon for Harry P. Owen a former judge of the seventh judicial district who died at his home Saturday at age 72.
A United Air Lines plane carrying ten people disappeared during a snowstorm near Salt Lake City. The wreckage was later sighted on Bountiful Peak northeast of Centerville. Two bodies were visible, with all seven passengers and crew feared dead. The craft had last reported from Layton indicating snowy conditions.
Thomas Edward Shipley, 25, attempted to cash a $28.50 forged check at First National Bank. Police intervened as he tried to swallow the evidence, grabbing the torn check from him and securing it for court. He is held in county jail.
Dick Callens of Roswell earned qualification as a flying instructor and will assist J. C. Barnett in teaching five scholarship winners in the C. A. A. aviation course. He completed two weeks of Amarillo training and passed yesterday. He recently received a commercial pilot license authorizing passenger service nationwide.
Col J D Atwood of Roswell New Mexico attorney and Democrat will speak over radio station KOB tonight in behalf of Willkie. The hour long program runs from 8 to 9 p m. Six prominent New Mexico Democrats supporting Willkie will answer questions before Atwood speaks.
A Roswell voting map on Page Three shows the district boundaries as correct and the listing of voting places in the lower left corner with a few changes from the map. Polls open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
H M Combs of Sears Roebuck furniture dept. ran a three line advertisement for an expert linoleum layer Marvin Gully. He stated that twelve orders were received in two days directly traceable to that ad.
A four person operation sold twelve orders of linoleum, showing solid demand. The small shop reported steady sales and customer interest, highlighting efficient service and inventory handling amid a competitive market.
