Plans are advanced for the American Mining Congress meeting in El Paso November 14 to 18 with a 100 member business committee guiding arrangements. El Paso will spend about $10,000 on the congress, with lectures, displays, and escorted visits to a large smelter planned to entertain and inform visitors. A separate Carlsbad Roswell committee travels to Washington to urge Interior Department acceptance of a U S Reclamation Service report to buy and upgrade Carlsbad irrigation works, warning that non-approval could jeopardize the region. Seven states and major cities vote on November 7 with governor and state officers in Massachusetts Rhode Island Virginia and Ohio. Pennsylvania elects officers judges and regents. New York City Indianapolis Louisville Salts vote. Party fusion and third parties shape contests. six mayoral races noted in New York and Indianapolis.
Seven indictments returned, six public. B H Tallmadge and C C Young named for conspiring to defraud the government and perjury, with Walter Haynes John F McGrew and James W Overstreet also charged. All pleaded not guilty and posted bonds totaling 5 000 3 000 and 1 000 each. Case set for April term. Tail and Rabb also indicted for conspiracy.
Mrs James Brennan of Minneapolis shot and killed three of her children Lizzie 15 Alice 6 Arthur 12 and wounded the fourth Thomas age unknown after a quarrel with her husband. She then shot herself in the left breast and is believed to die. One child died at a hospital and the fourth cannot recover. The dead are Lizzie Alice and Arthur. The boys struggled to escape.
Mrs A L Rumer aged 27 who came from El Dorado Kansas with her husband last March died last night at her South Hill home from tuberculosis. She leaves no children and was a member of the Christian church. The remains will be shipped to Mystic Iowa for burial. Elder C C Hill will conduct a prayer service before the train. Mr Rumer will return to make his home here.
A Southern Pacific Coast Line limited passenger train collided with a tour car train at Santa Margarita station, fourteen miles north of San Luis Obispo. Nineteen people were injured, several seriously, in the wreck reported yesterday.
A large work crew has begun the depot foundation at Lake Arthur on Monday. The concrete foundation will be about six feet deep, with the building planned in manufactured stone and a stylish extension roof. The stone walls will enclose a 20 by 48 foot footprint. Local lumber firms J E Whiteman and Lake Arthur Lumber Co. expand storage and improve yards. Mrs Fannie Balmuth relocated to a new building and is preparing stock for business. A W Whitlock returns from a long Southeast Texas and Louisiana trip.
Washington, Nov 4. The comptroller of the currency dismissed Bank Examiner R H Mattern for failing to uncover conditions at Enterprise National Bank of Allegheny City. Owen Reeves Jr. appointed to fill vacancy. Reeves previously assisted in New York City auditors. Authorities say no criminal intent or collusion suspected, but Mattern was deemed credulous in accepting bank statements and inefficient in examinations.
Howard Ringo faced charges of forging checks in Carlsbad and stealing a horse and saddle at Lakewood. He escaped during the afternoon but was recaptured after a brief, suspenseful chase.
