Levi Strauss plans new Roswell plant with 700 to 800 jobs

Levi Strauss & Co announces a $2.5 million 95 000 square foot plant at South Main and Brasher Road Roswell. The project will start in spring 1973 with completion about a year later and will consolidate operations for Roswell. Current plants employ about 550 with a target 700 to 800 after opening.

New Mexico State Board Meets in Roswell Approves Education Package

The State Board of Education in Roswell for the first time outside Santa Fe discussed a legislative package for the 1973 session. It includes a $1.4 million part time kindergarten program, stricter attendance rules, and competency based teacher certification. Perrin outlined funding and a revised school finance formula while special education and gifted programs are included. The disciplinary issue involving Perrin was dropped after a prior challenge by Marshall E. Farris.

Halloween winners at ENM State Fairgrounds parade

Two four year old children won costumes in the Halloween Fun Festival parade at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Lydia McKinley, 4, and Alex Gonzales Jr., 4, were named top youngsters in the youths event as part of a broader report on education and ethics commissions in New Mexico.

Thieu demands separate talks for peace in Vietnam

In a National Day broadcast Thieu called on North Vietnam to negotiate a peace treaty and cease-fire with Saigon while rejecting a disguised coalition. He urged separate talks with North Vietnam and the Viet Cong and demanded North Vietnamese troop withdrawal.

United Way drive nears its goal in Chaves County

Hasslar Strickland reports the Federal Campaign of the United Way of Chaves County has collected 3608.33 from civilian and military federal employees, topping the 3500 goal and lifting the campaign total to 137874.35, 78 percent of the 175889 target. Distribution allocates 85 percent to local United Way, 10 percent to National Health Agencies, and 5 percent to International Service Agencies. Federal offices with full participation include SSA, IRS, GSA, ASCS, Selective Service, Weather Service, APHIS Detachment 1 of the 22nd Bomb Wing, and the Wildlife Service. Weather: Mostly fair, cold today and tonight. high 45, low 30, and near 59 Thursday.

Halloween Festival At ENM State Fairgrounds Draws 600

About 600 people attended the Halloween Fun Festival in the Commercial Exhibitions Building at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds. The event featured a costumed parade, 10 youth costume classes with prizes, prize winners by category, and top booths including the Audio Visual Library booth and a Girl Scouts food booth.
