Low turnout in Chaves County primaries prompts concern
As the June 3 primaries approach, early and absentee voting in Chaves County is well below recent totals with 2 062 ballots cast by Friday. County Clerk Dave Kunko calls turnout unusually low, noting fewer contested races and a lack of interest compared with 2010 figures. Early voting runs until today at Area D and the Roswell Mall.

Lunch supports vet cemetery in Roswell
A free lunch sponsored by Pioneer Bank and the American Legion Legion Riders drew support for a Veterans Cemetery in Roswell. Legion Riders Jimmy Montoya David Brown Jaime Fierro and Phillip Lopez staffed the event as 100 plus meals had been served by 1 p.m. Donations were accepted.

Polling sites and hours for Chaves County primaries
Voters must be registered Democrats or Republicans to vote in the June 3 primaries. Polls open 7 a.m. and close 7 p.m. at seven locations in Roswell and area including Berrendo Middle School, Hampton Inn, Roswell Baptist Temple, Goddard High School, Del Norte Elementary, La Quinta Inn, and Grace Community Church.

Carlsbad man dies in Eddy County head on crash
A 35 year old Carlsbad resident Frederick Tapaha died when his northbound vehicle crossed the centerline on State Road 31 and collided head on with a southbound tractor trailer. Police say alcohol was not a contributing factor.

Man hides under trailer as police nab fleeing driver
Roswell police arrested 25 year old Daniel Munoz on aggravated fleeing from an officer and two counts of abandonment or abuse of a child after he fled a traffic stop with two children in the vehicle. He was coaxed out from under a trailer on East Bland Street.

Feds say sealing WIPP could take two years or more
The Energy Department warned it may take about 100 work weeks or longer to seal hundreds of containers at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad New Mexico.
