Allied troops retreat across Crete as German radio declares three major cities captured and British forces stream toward the coast seeking escape to Egypt by small craft. Berlin reports General Freyberg killed. Cairo broadcast referenced.
Water from the Hondo river floods the west side of the city in the early afternoon, with business districts likely to flood. Lyman Gilliland, 25, of Carlsbad, is feared drowned after attempting to cross Blackwater draw last night. his brothers T W Gilliland, 23, and Jack Gilliland, 19, escaped. A search by city, county, state officers and about 20 CCC enrollees failed to locate Gilliland or the missing car.
E G Minton vice chairman of the Chaves county Red Cross disaster committee urged a countywide Saturday gift day for Carlsbad flood victims. He said hundreds in the county have yet to contribute though many have given. funds may be left at First National Bank Chamber of Commerce or Equitable Building and Loan Association.
Across the nation military and civil guards were posted at defense plants amid sabotage fears. Fort Dix canceled memorial day leaves for 14,000 soldiers and Fort Custer held a realistic practice alert that even fooled officials. Anti aircraft guns and security measures appeared in California, Los Angeles harbor lights, and police guards expanded nationwide as towns prepared for possible threats.
Charles Boreing was elected president of the Lions Club for the coming year, succeeding A N Etz. L M Prager is vice president, James Jennings second VP, Dr J P Reynolds third VP. Leo Roger is secretary treasurer, Floyd Ikard tail twister, with Don Kester Ernest Arnold Buddy Dennison Manuel Moseley and N F Rivers as directors. Gabe Martin elected new member. guests Jason Kellahin and Hobbs Lions Club rep Hamilton attended.
Roswell's Bob Crosby world steer roping champion defends his title against Cliff Arnold of Arizona in a Lions Club sponsored match. Crosby, who beat Arnold at Carlsbad, holds a 257 second world record for roping ten steers set in Carlsbad on November 10, 1940. A $2,000 side bet underscores the event. Crosby has won the Roosevelt trophy as worlds champion all around cowboy three times.
The report lists 24 hour temperature readings at three hour intervals ending 11 30 a m today with values from 28 to 66 and a comparison to yesterday and normal highs and lows for the date. It notes precipitation trace in the past 24 hours, month to date 6 36 inches and year to date 14 46 inches, and daily sunrise sunset times 4 50 to 7 00 with a 14 2 hour day length.
Mauri Rose won the 500 mile race at Indianapolis driving in relief for Floyd Davis after his own car retired at 152 miles. Rose, from Indianapolis, finished about two and a half miles ahead of Rex Mays with Ted Horn third. Saylor suffered critical injuries in a crash, his first appearance in a speedway race. Wilbur Shaw crashed later while leading at 380 miles.
Whitlow Wyatt pitched five hit ball for his eighth straight win as the Brooklyn Dodgers crushed the New York Giants 8 0 in front of 60 000 fans. The Dodgers built an early lead, scoring four runs over the first three innings and adding four more late. Batteries: Wyatt Owen for Brooklyn. McGee Adams Brown and Danning for New York.
In Philadelphia on May 30, the Phillies rallied to beat Boston 6-5 in the opener of a holiday twin bill. Danny Litwhiler and Babe Dahlgren homered as Philadelphia clawed back after a slow start. Batter details note Tobin Posedel Sulli van and Berres for Boston, Gremp Blanton Crouch Warren for Philadelphia.
The Yankees, down to Earl Johnson through eight frames, exploded for three runs in the ninth to beat Boston 4 3 in the opener of a May 30 doubleheader. Frank Crosetti delivered a bases loaded single for two RBIs as New York overcame a 3 1 deficit.
City council will consider calling a bond election for flood control work in Roswell at the next regular meeting. Mayor Thomas J. Hall and city engineer Lea Rowland returned from Galveston after discussions with Army Corps officials about the flood survey. Army engineers will not perform flood control work locally but will provide maps and data and cooperate with future city plans.
New Mexico Military Institute and Roswell prepare to host the 43rd annual commencement program beginning tomorrow. A large influx of visitors and alumni arrives ahead of a four day event ending with the graduation of 140 cadets next Tuesday. Tomorrow features regimental inspection drill exhibitions and a cadet jambolaya. Sunday includes a bacalaureate service a polo game a regimental parade a band concert and an alumni lawn party the superintendent's quarters.
In Philadelphia an America First rally drew about 15 000 people as Charles A. Lindbergh charged President Roosevelt with seeking world domination. He warned a policy like Roosevelt's could trigger a hemispheric war lasting generations and asserted the nation will stay out of foreign war despite calls for involvement.

Arizona fair with little temperature change. West Texas partly cloudy with showers today and Saturday. Temperatures near normal in Arizona and New Mexico, slightly above normal in West Texas.
A blaze in the south garage at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, three hours before the 500 mile race, destroyed three race cars and 30 garages, lightly burned three men, and caused about 100000 dollars in damage. Only one burned car was entered in the race. Continued on page four.
Washington reports census bureau calculations indicate 3,509 New Mexico youths aged 21 since last October 16 will register for selective service on July 1. Nationally the bureau estimates 832,000 21-year-olds will register, versus the army guess of 1,000,000. Texas totals 41,429 and Arizona 3,249. War Department authorizes 471,600 for Fort Bliss repair and overhaul facilities as part of an $8,774,630 nine-region program for maintenance units.
Mexican authorities rushed troops to Santa Ana Jalisco to quell unrest after a love affair sparked a shooting that killed five and wounded two. The clash pitted villagers against each other, claiming a young lover, two of his brothers, and two brothers of the girl.
Helsinki reports Finland's food crisis worsened as the government cuts meat rations to about five cents weekly per person. The move marks a drastic step amid mounting shortages and economic strain for households nationwide.
Berlin reports a decisive Allied collapse as German forces seize Retimo Candia Canea and Suda Bay after an eleven day battle. Parachute troops supported by air strikes allegedly secured Candia and Crete’s key targets despite strong Greek resistance. The official DNB communique says the victory is complete.
New Mexico American Legion Commander Charles Morgan of Artesia spoke at Memorial Day services in South Park cemetery. He praised the sacrificed soldiers as defenders of humanity who conquered prejudice and bondage, then warned that freedom and liberty must be re purchased by every generation through sacrifice.
Despite Memorial Day closures, defense production chiefs cheered by steps to end industrial strife. A strike threat at the Packard Motor Car plant in Detroit was lifted, walkouts ended at an Illinois Chemical Works and a Pennsylvania Shell factory, and Nashville AFL Building Trades Unions named a coordinator to prevent work stoppages on defense projects.
