NM Institute commencement draws visitors for 43rd annual program

Crowds from across the United States and abroad attend the New Mexico Military Institute 43rd annual commencement. Governor Miles to award diplomas to 140 cadets, with Dr. E. L. Overholser giving the graduation address and Cadet Martin delivering the valedictory. Dr. Austin Crile to deliver the baccalaureate sermon at Las Hall auditorium. Polo match with Fort Bliss all stars at 2:30, parade and concerts, alumni events, and Cadet Jambolaya capped by a busy four day schedule.

Pecos River Survey Offices Closed as Move Planned

Field offices of the Pecos River Joint Investigation under the National Resources Planning Board, housed in Roswell City Hall, closed Saturday. Engineer in charge Harlowe M. Stafford will move the office to Denver. The mimeographed final report, about 500 pages, will be binding and released to New Mexico and Texas officials around mid June. Volume one will cover the N R P B findings, with maps in volume two and cooperating agencies in volume three. The survey began July 1 1939.

Ickes Named Coordinator Of The Oil Industry

Secretary of Interior Harold L. Ickes is named national defense petroleum coordinator and prepares initial orders for oil industry regulations after assurances from the Justice Department that anti trust prosecutions will not block his program. Attorney General Jackson negotiates with 22 major oil firms for a possible out of court settlement to avoid friction with Ickes plan. Russell B. Brown of the Independent Petroleum Association says the industry will cooperate as officials seek to prevent transport disruptions from tanker realignments. House leaders plan legislation to empower Roosevelt to order pipeline construction moving 100 million barrels of oil annually from southwestern fields to the Atlantic seaboard, advancing a measure approved by the Interstate Commerce Committee.

Body of Flood Victim Found Near Roswell

Lyman Gilliland, 28, a Carlsbad potash company employee, drowned in a Blackwater Draw flood Thursday night. His body was recovered Saturday morning on the Berrendo bank near Roswell, about 15 miles by river from where his car was swept away. Enrollees from CCC camps west of Roswell found his Chevrolet two miles from the highway. two brothers escaped the flood with help from locals. An inquest is set for Monday at Roswell. Gilliland formerly lived in Kermit Texas and worked for Union Potash Company. About 125 CCC enrollees and three camp officers had joined state and county efforts.
