Chaves County Junior Rodeo crowns new queen Kim Irvin

Kim Irvin, 14, was crowned the 1977 Chaves County Junior Rodeo Queen at a Saturday night ceremony. She will reign over today’s events at 1 30 p m and also won the horsemanship award. Irvin led a court that includes first runnerup Becki Evans and second runnerup Sandy Swarengin, with Lisa Dupree named 1977 princess.

Death toll over 120 in Beverly Hills Club fire tragedy

In Southgate Kentucky a raging fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club killed more than 120 holiday revelers as panic and smoke swept the crowded venue. Fire Chief Dick Riesenberg cited panic as a major factor while rescue crews battled the blaze and evacuated patrons.

Interior weighs killing golden eagles to curb rancher losses

The Interior Department considers a limited removal of problem golden eagles to reduce livestock predation while preserving populations. A Denver Fish and Wildlife official cited a plan study and said no killing plan is adopted yet. Spokesmen note killing would be a last option and current actions include trapping and relocation.

Couple sues Roswell Daily Record over naming teen daughter

A Roswell, New Mexico, couple sues the Roswell Daily Record for 1.420 million dollars claiming publishing their 14 year old daughter's name in January 1976 violated privacy. They say the report tied to a December 1975 alleged crime damaged the family causing relocation and public shaming. The suit seeks 10 000 special damages 50 000 general and 100 000 punitive for the father and 1 000 for the mother plus 50 000 general and 1 million punitive as guardian.

Veterans plan Memorial Day services in Roswell area

Roswell area veterans groups schedule Memorial Day rites across local cemeteries. Hagerman Cemetery hosts 9 a.m. service by Unit 43 American Legion Auxiliary and Hagerman churches. Memory Lawn hosts 10 a.m. service by Curtis-Montgomery Post 2575 VFW with keynote speaker John Anderson, a Pearl Harbor veteran. South Park Cemetery holds 11 a.m. service by Disabled American Veterans Sunshine State Chapter 4 and American Legion Post 28 with Rev. Kevin Moynahan officiating. All veterans graves to be decorated with flags. scouts assist starting at 7 a.m.
