Judge Mudge Pope issued an opinion sustaining the well tax in the Artesian well dispute. The ruling confirms municipal authority to levy taxes on wells within the jurisdiction. Local officials welcomed the decision as upholding intended revenue mechanisms.
Judge Wm. H. Pope rules New Mexico Artesian Well Act of 1905 valid. Court holds five dollar tax per well for inspection expenses is proper regulation to prevent waste and overuse, balancing owner rights with public water conservation across artesian basins.
Dilley Furniture Co announces a large array of Old Hickory lawn and porch furniture now in stock at the Roswell store. President Roosevelt sails from Washington aboard the cruiser Mayflower to Portsmouth Virginia where he will deliver a Memorial Day address before the Army and Navy. The trip is planned for May 30 following today’s departure.
The government will ignore the lower house demand for resignation, treat its resolution as non binding, and avoid dissolving parliament. It will present its agrarian reform proposals, allow parliament to draft its own plans if rejected, and release political prisoners soon without granting amnesty.

A mob seized a special train and went to Tallulah to hang R. L. Rogers, a white man accused of murdering Jesse Brown of Girard. Rogers, previously found guilty, had a change of venue and a new trial ordered before the execution.
Washington May 29. At the two hour conference on the railroad rate bill several amendments were tentatively agreed and much time was spent on Jim Crow car provisions. The issue has stirred opposition from northern Negroes. Senator Tillman refused to back any change to the Senate provision.

James E. Scripps founder and longtime publisher of the Detroit Evening News and later of the Tribune died at his home after a long illness. He previously served as a director of the Associated Press. The Detroit native was 71.
Harrisburg May 29 Governor Pennypacker declined comment on ordering state police to prevent a prize fight between Fitzsimmons and Burns at the Tuxedo Athletic Club in North Essington tonight.
Isaac Stanfield, the oil expert supervising the well east of Roswell, said last night that indications remain favorable and the drill is in the Trenton Limestone at about two hundred feet. Rumors of an oil strike are not supported.
