Three men died in two traffic crashes on New Mexico highways Saturday. Manuel Gomez Placencio, 27, of Central, died after his car left NM 356 near Bayard and overturned. Ramon Archuleta, 51, of Espanola, and Julian Salazar, 28, of Chamita, died in a head on crash on NM 30 south of Espanola when a Chevron tanker collided with Salazar’s car. both vehicles burned.

Ex Player Cleared in Aggravated Assault Case
Steve Shropshire, 22, former University of New Mexico basketball player, had a charge of aggravated assault dropped by Assistant Dist. Atty. James L. Brandenburg. The case was dismissed after a psychiatrist report and team doctor evaluation found he could not form criminal intent at the time. Silver City AP Forest Service officials warned Saturday that rapid extinguishing of about 30 small fires in the Gila National Forest unlikely. Looming winds and drying trends risked worsening the blazes caused by Friday’s lightning, with 28 smokejumpers from Missoula and Indian crews aiding efforts as tanks and aircraft drop slurry. The largest fire was about 50 acres, trenches dug around each blaze, and several fires already extinguished by noon.
