A 1994 Justice Department based report cites harrowing figures. It estimates 683000 women raped annually in the US with 1.3 forcible rapes per minute and 1871 daily. It notes underreporting, high acquaintance rape, and severe consequences including medical care needs.
In New Mexico rape crisis services are free and confidential whether or not reporting to police. Esperanza House SANE Project provides forensic exams by trained RNs, evidence collection, and court testimony. Four nurses on 24 hour call, 32 pediatric exams, 55 adult exams, ages 4 months to 80. Multidisciplinary SART team responds immediately in Roswell for any age or gender.
The court considers allowing race or ethnicity as one factor in diversity efforts while not the sole criterion. It argues that white non-Hispanic applicants who are first in their family to attend college could add diversity, beyond racial diversity, to campuses like Yale. The piece urges ending race based condescension and promoting varied diversity.
