Roswell Red Cross activates disaster relief for Spring River floods with 40 volunteers assisting in locating families sorting clothing and answering welfare inquiries. Disaster chair W C Taylor announced relief registration from today through May 29 at 304 E Bland St.
United States Weather Bureau readings show three hourly data from 2 p.m. yesterday to 11 a.m. today with highs around 83 and a low near 55. Forecast calls for considerable cloudiness with a few thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, increasing tomorrow. High near 88 and low around 55. Sunrise 4 55, sunset 6 54, day length 14 hours.
New Mexico cattlemen accuse the Army of a large land grab to expand White Sands Proving Ground. State officials protest lack of warning as the land plan targets more than 647 000 acres across public state and private holdings. Association president cites proof of the effort without governor or land commissioner knowledge. Senator Anderson and Reps Dempsey Fernandez alerted to the ten day delay.
The Salvation Army post led by Capt. J Bawden gathers and sorts clothing shoes furniture and household items for flood victims. A large room is a sorting center with items on tables. National Guard crews pick up donations. Distressed individuals are urged to contact the Salvation Army for help.
The Roswell Daily Record offers limited copies for Tuesday with flash flood coverage. Roswell declared a disaster area. Fifteen hundred extra copies were sold yesterday at 424 N. Main St. Record circulation manager R. M. Higginbotham announced.
U. S. District Judge Carl Hatch refused to dismiss a $195,219 damage suit against Lordsburg. Plaintiffs Mr. and Mrs. Louis Joseph of Texas claim injuries after a Lordsburg garbage truck driven by ae V. Brown collided with their car.
President Eisenhower said he does not intend to relax or rescind the secrecy order that suspended the McCarthy Army hearings. He urged resumption of the hearings to allow all facts to come out, insisting the Army acted independently of the White House. He noted Army Counselor John G. Adams and Sherman Adams discussed the Army's issues with McCarthy and clarified the purpose of the order was to keep the televised hearings on track.
The Cahoon Park Boy Scout headquarters suffered an estimated 4000 loss in equipment badges and supplies. Most of the 5000 scout records and large stocks of certificates were destroyed. Cleaning and salvage work proceeded while Court of Honor at the County Courthouse remained on schedule for Thursday evening at 7 30 p m to recognize advancements.
Geneva dispatch reports Vietminh high command sources say Genevieve de Galard Terraube, captured at Dien Bien Phu, will be released today. She aided wounded French troops during the siege and earlier flew in on March 27 before her plane was shot down.
A Paris dispatch reports 60 to 80 French Union wounded from Dien Bien Phu are expected to arrive in Hanoi today. Evacuation relies on helicopters as the airstrip remains unusable for heavier planes. Eighteen wounded were flown to Luang Prabang yesterday and eleven were evacuated last week before a temporary suspension.
A condemnation suit to improve U S Highway 70 west of Roswell was filed Monday in District Court. The case is State of New Mexico and Board of County Commissioners versus Will Cullum Burgie et al. Defendants include R E Griffith Realty Co and the Methodist and First Baptist Churches.
A woman near Jemez New Mexico was photographed with a divided stick not for water. She claimed the rod was used to hunt for uranium in the area.
Police patrolled flood devastated Roswell area as residents returned home to clean up. Between 500 and 650 people stayed with others, while 750 to 1,000 were evacuated as a 16 foot crest flooded the spring river Monday night. Mayor Ballard estimated over one million dollars in damage to homes, cars, streets and bridges. North Main Street bridge damage deemed minor by engineer A M Morrison with repairs underway.
City will clear flood debris in flooded sectors. Mayor Ballard announced residents needing help should call 516 and a city truck will respond to remove rubbish from their area.
