William Guinther, a one legged American solo flier from Kutztown Pennsylvania, wins the Ziff-Davis meritorious entry award in the transatlantic air race. He met and aided Frederick Clauser during bad weather, staying in touch until Clauser ditched near the Faroe Islands. Guinther, 42, a Korean War veteran with 80 missions, flew Beech 36 Bonanza routes both ways, posting 24 hours 15 minutes 1.34 seconds to London and 22 hours 13 minutes 18.31 seconds back to New York.

A blazing gasoline barge torn from its moorings by explosions injured four and left several missing at La Grange Missouri. Fire Destroys Frame House At 507 S Lea Roswell
A vacant frame house at 507 South Lea was nearly destroyed by fire reported at 2 am to Roswell police. Owned by Roger W Woods of Arlington Texas the blaze was brought under control by three central station units in about 20 minutes. Two units were dismissed after spot fires were out, a third remained on scene until 5 37 am. About 2000 gallons of water were used. The cause was undetermined though a closet in a bedroom is suspected.
