Cadets from New Mexico Military Institute prepare to march to an athletic awards cookout late Sunday afternoon. Capt. Lorraine Carney and Lt. Col. A. D. Brownfield oversee the event while Cadet Col. Randy A. Huston of Las Vegas serves as regimental leader.
David R. Berkowitz pleaded guilty to all six Son of Sam killings. The 24-year-old former Yonkers postal clerk admitted the murders and fires claim, with Bronx and Queens judges present. Sentencing for the Moskowitz case set for May 22.
At New Mexico Military Institute the first class dropped rank by leaving shoulderboards on the field then later reissued them at an athletic banquet. Brig. Gen. Gerald Childress pledged policy review and a stronger corps as 107 cadets prepare for Saturday commencement in Roswell area.

In Chicago on Wednesday the Council on Fine Arts unveiled a 100 foot sausage lettuce and cheese sandwich to mark the first anniversary of its in formation booth. Caterers used 130 pounds of sausage and cheese 22 heads of lettuce and about two gallons of catsup and mustard. A 3 foot candle topped the creation and it was cut up and handed out at noon.

Firefighters from East Grand Plains Sierra Berrendo and Dexter fought a Sunday night blaze that destroyed the Midway Community Center a two story wooden building once a former Walker Air Force Base barracks. Chief King Redd said the structure was 75 percent involved on arrival and could not be saved. Residents described flames up to 50 feet high and gaps in local fire protection with no hydrants noted. The cause remains undetermined.
