Labor group skips endorsement for governor

Organized labor in New Mexico chose a hands off stance in the governor race as the AFL CIO COPE did not endorse a candidate in the governor’s primary. The group did endorse several Democrats for other offices including attorney general treasurer and land commissioner with a handful of Republican endorsements for the House.

Syrian air battle erupts as Israeli jets hit Syria

Reports from Damascus say Syrian forces downed four Israeli jets during a 56 day clash on Mt Hermon and the Golan front while Israel said no air activity occurred. A second Syrian claim reported three planes down west of the cease fire line as fighting continued.

Syrian demands Israeli leaders still unyielding

In Jerusalem the Israeli government held firm as talks with Secretary of State Kissinger continued. A cabinet spokesman said no decisions were made and the negotiations remained fluid. Israel faces a tough choice on relinquishing 1967 war gains and retreating from key Syrian territories including Kuneitra and surrounding mountains.

Calley bond hearing signals possible freedom continued

Federal judge J. Robert Elliott indicated there is precedent to keep former Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr. free on bond while appeals proceed as prosecutors argued otherwise. He set hearings for May 20 on constitutional challenges and June 24 on the merits of Calley's appeal.

Roswell Board Meets to Discuss Budgets and Bids

The Roswell Independent School District Board of Education will hold its regular May meeting at 7 30 p.m. Tuesday in Edgewood Elementary School. Reinecke trial set for July 15 in perjury case

A July 15 trial date was set for California Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke on three counts of lying before a Senate committee. The judge indicated motions to dismiss or move the trial to California will be denied. Reinecke originally sought a speedy trial before California primaries. The indictment ties to a $400,000 offer from Sheraton Corp. to underwrite the San Diego convention.
