An off‑duty Roswell fireman Lonnie D. Moore was shot near his Highland Road home and fired back from his pickup rifle rack. He remained in stable condition at St Marys Hospital with a possible abdominal wound. Police noted three bullet holes in the truck and ongoing investigation.
The New Mexico Association of Counties elected James R Williams of Grady as president for 1979. Betty B White became first vice president, Dan Gutierrez as second vice president, and regional representatives were chosen. Al Romero urged counties to reclaim funds and restore the 20 mill property tax levy for operating expenses.
Reports to the Daily Record tally a rising toll from a severe storm that drenched the city with cold rain and wind. Mrs. J C Rector counted 192 dead birds on her rural property and estimated at least 200 there total. Earlier kills include Elmer Spence on N Union Ave and several yards along Walnut and Atkinson Avenues.

An 8 year old boy in Pittsburg with a 6 year old companion found an unlocked pickup with the key in the ignition and drove about a quarter mile before being stopped by police. The boys were reprimanded and scolded at home after the midnight incident.
In an arroyo near San Ysidro, paleontologists uncovered a 60 to 70 foot Sauropod skeleton dating to 135 to 140 million years ago. BLM lands host the site with Keith Rigby leading the dig and Barry Kues of the University of New Mexico calling it the first complete skeleton of its age found in the state.
