In Vado New Mexico talk of secession surfaces as residents press the state for a water well after seven years of efforts. Some members wonder annexation to Mexico might yield water sooner. The village sits near the border south of Las Cruces and hosts about 50 families.
Dartmouth College formally apologized to former Gov. George C. Wallace of Alabama for the hecklers at a Wednesday night appearance. Dean Thaddeus Seymour expressed regret that students infringed on Wallace's rights as a guest. Her six-person court includes Muffy Brownfield, Michal Teal, Betti Sturgeon, Trine Dixon, Susan Dibble, and Nelma Allison with escorts from NMMI cadets and area schools.
Two Odessa men died when a pickup and a truck-trailer collided head on on U S 180 west of Hobbs. Identified were Jack Clair Underwood 46 and Walter Bond about 50. Jim Caylor of El Paso driver of the truck-trailer was treated for a scalp cut. His truck carried pig iron.
Gov. David Cargo announced the resignation of Supt. Phil Carter of the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School effective immediately. Carter denied resigning, while Cargo said Rutherford, named by Carter as director of personnel, will also leave soon.
President Johnson asks Congress to create a five member presidential panel to mediate for 30 days with railroads and six craft unions. If unresolved, hearings would test White House panel findings, then wage proposals could take effect after 91 days for up to two years.
