Honolulu reports a third hospital flight with 22 sick and wounded returning from prison camps amid Army secrecy. Maj. Mitchell cites security and compassion excuses, fueling speculation on prisoner status.
Readings at three hour intervals from 2 p.m. yesterday to 11 a.m. today show a high of 80 and a low of 49 with no precipitation in the last 24 hours. Normal highs and lows for the date are 79 and 49. Sunrise is 5 10, sunset 6 40. day length 13.5 hours. Weather is mostly clear with decreasing wind and continued dryness. Not so warm today with a high near 80 and a low around 42 tonight, slightly warmer tomorrow.
Buffalo court draws about 75 University of Buffalo students as observers. Judge John L. Kelly directs, placing the girls in front and the boys in back, saying “Put those pretty girls up front” and “Give the judge a break.”
The city planning and zoning commission proposed rezoning the corner of Lea and Deming from commercial to duplex area. The recommendation, to be submitted to the city council on May 5, follows a two hour meeting at City Hall and a petition protest against an ice cream drive-in. The panel also denied Dr. Chet L. Snyder’s clinic request at Alameda and Kansas and recommended denying rezoning South Virginia amid Dan Lehman’s petition.
A Commerce Department survey of 481 cities over 25 000 shows Roswell has lower spending and per capitas than most peers and a smaller revenue intake. 1951 expenditures rose 3.5 percent with revenues up 6.5 percent while Roswell recorded 748000 dollars in spending and 763000 dollars in general revenues.
In a May Day address on Red Square Marshal Nikolai Bulganin urged Western leaders to back peaceful statements with action. He pressed for real arms reductions near the Soviet Union and signaled continued defense readiness until the armament race ends. The speech accompanied a military parade and Moscow workers’ display while Pravda called for a cold war armistice.
Outside the Iron Curtain workers marked the holiday with rallies and speeches. Berlin hosted rival May Day actions less than a mile apart with East and West staging contrasting displays. Soviet sector workers marched past a reviewing stand of Communist chiefs as West Berliners gathered near the ruined Reichstag to oppose Communist encroachment.
Roswell reports wind damaged a portion of the Mountain View school roof this week. The Mountain View district plans a May 11 bond election for 50 000 dollars to fund a new school to replace the current remodeled barracks.
Gov Mechem ousted Roy Carey as chairman of the New Mexico State Game Commission and named Henry Brown to replace him. Both men are Carlsbad residents. Carey allegedly refused to resign when asked by the governor.
St Louis fails to capitalize as New York wins 26 to 3 in a string of hits. Staley D Rice Koslo and Wilhelm toil on mound while cross trouble in early innings limits visitors.
A memorial on the New Mexico Military Institute campus at Main Street and College Boulevard nears completion. It honors alumni and corps members who served, and late Gayle G. Armstrong, Class of 1920. Built of yellow brick, four and a half feet high and 50 feet long, it features bronze letters, a commemorative plaque, and concealed floodlights. Valley Building Company built it from a design by Vorhees Standhardt Swatek. a gift from Mrs. Gayle G. Armstrong.
A violent tornado struck Warner Robins Georgia killing 14 people and injuring about 250 to 300. It damaged Robins Air Force Base and town structures with hundreds of homes and buildings torn apart and many injured or unaccounted for.
President Eisenhower said the administration sees no way to balance the budget for the next fiscal year, delaying any fresh tax cuts. Senator Taft warned Congress may approve new appropriations without final spending estimates, while George forecast possible no tax reductions beyond the excess profits levy end and the January income tax cut. House leaders kept hope for a tax cut, with talks of further appropriations cuts.
A Carlsbad district court jury found John Calvin Rice of Roswell guilty of manslaughter in the Christmas Day automobile crash near Roswell that killed two people. Sentencing was deferred to May 11 with bond continued. jury recommended clemency. The case moved from Roswell to Carlsbad on venue. Dist Atty Pat Hanagan led for the state. defense was Glenn G. Stiff.
High winds fed last night’s blazes in and near Roswell destroying two homes on the French Farms southeast of town. The Greens’ house burned with their four children rescued by Mrs Green. another empty house burned as volunteers fought a half mile distant fire, a storage shed and an illuminated sign also destroyed. Fire Chief Daniels cited a short circuit as the sign’s cause and noted water access hampered efforts.
Thirteen cadets, including G. Wayne Ansted Johnny Owen and Max Schrimsher from Roswell, were designated distinguished military students at New Mexico Military Institute Col O O Wilson announced the honor. Other honorees include Hugh Cate Los Angeles Louis Drummond Albuquerque Vernon Hallenback Colorado Springs William Kemp Susanville Henry Leisy Canal Zone and Juan Mendez Carlsbad.

The Senate extended its debate on the state offshore lands bill with no votes today and no Saturday session. Taft hopes amendments are acted on Monday. final passage is targeted for Tuesday. Opponents failed to block the measure after two defeats on offshore boundary amendments.
State chambers of commerce spanning Albuquerque Roswell and Hobbs urge the Civil Aeronautics Board to extend Continental Airlines service from Wichita Falls Texas to Ft Worth and Dallas. Spokesmen Burl Huffman J R Atwood and J F Maddox told the board the new flight would link their communities with the Texas trio boosting oil gas cattle interests.
James H. Smiley escaped serious injury when a gas jet exploded in a room adjacent to his while he slept. A wall was knocked out and a row of closets separated him from the blast. The ignition source was gas escaping and ignited by a jet.
