Mother's Words Save Trooper Alive After Korean Captivity

Cpl. Wendell Treffery of Terryville Connecticut recalls surviving a brutal 1950 51 Korean prison ordeal. He endured frostbite dysentery and starvation after capture near the Changjin Reservoir as part of about 350 Marines and 7th Division men. PMID: He credits his mother’s words and a grim will to live as he was among fewer than 40 survivors returned at Panmunjom.

No. 2 White Oil Prospector Drills Below 90 Feet

Seaboard Republic No. 2 White oil prospecting well 34-11-29 began drilling last week and sits below 790 feet. A new wildcat location 1650 feet east and 3090 feet south of 15-14-31 is staked for 6540 feet. Various other wells including White-Keyes Keyes Federal 15-8-23 at 368 feet and Magnolia No. 1 Shaw Federal 6-13-31 at 8370 feet are in Chaves County with cable tools moving onto Kewanee 4-Mile Unit 26-18-18.

NMMI Colonel Visits Seniors in Belen

Col James R. Kelly dean of the college division of the New Mexico Military Institute met with high school seniors and parents from Belen and Los Lunas in Belen. He represented the Institute and noted other college officials were present. He also spoke to Portales Rotary Club with several former cadets in attendance.

Sgt. Gerald E. Neighbors of Hereford Texas is among prisoners freed by Reds and set to leave Tokyo tonight or tomorrow for the United States. His mother Mrs J T Russell of Roswell lives at 1321 Fast Hoagland. Neighbors wife and daughter reside in Hereford.

Allies consider freeing reluctant North Koreans at Panmunjom

PANMUNJOM The Allies warned the Communists they might release 32,000 North Koreans who do not want to go home. Lt. Gen. Harrison urged naming a neutral caretaker for 48,000 unwilling prisoners as talks resume. A short meeting followed as liaisons prepared to discuss exchange of disabled prisoners.

Damages Awarded in Roswell Auto Wreck Case

A district court jury in Roswell fixed damages totaling 16073.57 in a complex auto collision case from July 3, 1952. The suit, Herbert C. Aguayo et al versus Tommy D. Miller et al, involved three verdicts with damages to Della Mills, the Mills third party, and the Aguayo estate for two deaths. Dennis and Dwight Aguayo were killed. Mrs. Mills injured.

Gov. Mechem dismissed Roy Carey of Carlsbad from the State Game Commission effective midnight April 30 1953 Carey a Republican had refused to resign and may be replaced by Henry Brown The action followed pressure from the State Game Protective Association and came after Carey resisted a pledge to serve his term with no political interference.

Rice Automobile Manslaughter Case Heard in Carlsbad

State of New Mexico v John Calvin Rice moved from Chaves to Eddy County for a change of venue and set for hearing in Carlsbad before Dist. Judge C Roy Anderson. Rice faces manslaughter charges in an automob ile collision near Roswell on Christmas Day two years ago. Trial actions include plea of not guilty and venue motions filed earlier, with Dist Atty Pat Hanagan for the state and Glenn G Stiff for the defendant.

Two Children Hurt In Accidents Today

At noon two accidents injured a 3 year old girl and a 4 year old boy within 45 minutes. Gloria Chavez 3 of 1618 North Pontiac was hit by a car at Fifth and Main at 11 45 a m and taken to Marshall Clinic. George Ackroyd 4 sustained head injuries from a scaffold fall and was taken to Roswell Osteopathic Hospital.

Roswell High School Chorus and New Mexico Military Institute Glee Club combine for a Pearson Auditorium program Sunday at 8 30.
