Detroit depositors pour 11.54 million dollars into a new bank formed from the First National Bank Detroit and the Guardian National Bank. The opening day shows strong public confidence as funds are placed in the institution.
Washington March 30 The Black five day week six hour day bill was approved by the senate judiciary committee by 11 to 3. Introduced by Senator Black of Alabama the measure would require all industries to adopt the shorter work week. An amendment would make the law effective 30 days after enactment and last for two years.
Col William Mitchell former army air corps chief urged the House Military Affairs Committee to merge land sea and air forces into a single National Defense Department to cut costs by 250 to 300 million dollars annually. He argued submarines and planes should drive policy, noting WWI data on submarines and the need for renewed global reach.
Sheriff officers serve notices in Roswell and other points declaring slot machines and marble devices illegal under state law. Judge McGhee and District Attorney Peck’s office authorize action with penalties up to $500 fine and six months in jail per violation. Notices warn operators to remove devices or face arrests. only one notice will be served.
In Artesia New Mexico March 30 AP property owners facing delinquent tax suits must appear before the county board of equalization or surrender appeal rights. District Judge J B McGhee ruled appeals should go to the county board first then state tax commission if relief denied and only to district court as a last recourse. Judgments not issued before May 16 when legislature sets deadline to pay delinquent taxes without interest or penalties.
Harold Hurd of the Emergency Relief Board and Salvation Army resigns from the Emergency Relief Committee. He blasts relief efforts as a total failure and says the program mismanaged and out of control. He faults the system for discouraging work and hurting ranch and farming labor needs.
Roswell Rotary elected new officers and directors at today’s noon meeting. Reed Mulkey was named president, Thornton Boswell vice president and Claude Simpson secretary. New directors include Gill Amis, Bruce Connor, Berry Eltzer, H M Huff Sr, W J Melnnes, Reed Mulkey, and Thornton Boswell. Delegates Roy Daniel and Fred Miller were chosen for the Albuquerque conference with Claude Simpson and John Tweedy as alternates.
Santa Fe reports no funds available for the El Vado road project per State Highway Engineer W R Eccles. Construction would be possible but costly, and while an informal report exists no survey is planned.
AP reports Chairman J D Lamb of the Corporation Commission asked Mayor Clyde Tingley of Albuquerque to be honorary chairman for publicity and arrangements for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engine Men meeting to be held June 8 to 10. Lanth, former labor representative, urged Tingley to accept.
Santa Fe reports Gov. Arthur Seligman warns that over 3,730 federal aid workers and about 1,200 maintenance staff could lose their jobs if federal funding ends after July 1. He cites $3,777,029 active projects across 41 undertakings and notes state debentures worth $2,000,000 may be used to secure aid, with debenture sales uncertain if aid stops.
British gunboats scour the Manchurian coast after four officers from the Nanchang were kidnapped by a daring pirate crew. Fourteen pirates attacked, two Chinese crew wounded, officers W. E. Hargraves A. D. Bine F. L. Pears and Charles Johnson seized. The criminals demanded ransom and previously held a couple for 44 days, released for 32,500 dollars, opium, and clothing with Japanese police help.
City schools face funding shortfall with half month arrears and a coming month due. A 20 percent salary reduction is seen as the only solution to avoid layoffs. A meeting at Junior High School Saturday night will decide the measure.
The oil industry has asked the government for help amid low prices and over production. Representatives attending an administration sponsored conference urged federal aid to stabilize the industry. Continued on page four.
The senate accepted house amendments to the forest unemployment bill and sent it to President Roosevelt, who plans to start enlistments for forest conservation work almost immediately. Final approval came without a recorded vote amid debates on a separate relief measure creating a $500 million fund for direct state grants. The amendments bar discrimination in job selection and allow funds to be used for land purchases.
Berlin reports that Prof Albert Einstein may renounce his Prussian citizenship as he remains outside Germany and currently in Belgium. Born in Ulm he was Swiss before becoming a Prussian citizen in 1914 upon joining the Prussian Academy of Sciences.

Spring Frolic opens on Main street at 9 15 with Gus Lemp's Night Owls concert. A 9 30 style show follows as Main street between Second and Fourth is closed from 7 30 am to 5 pm. Free events include bicycle races for under sixteen, rolling skating at 1 30 pm with entry registration, and a night dance north of Third street.
A Caney Kansas youth, Haldeen Vaughan, held in Brownsville as a fugitive, admitted involvement in shootings and robberies across Kansas Oklahoma and New Mexico. He was detained after Ranger Sergeant Cogington questioned him regarding the Tulsa Texas Sheriff Mosley slaying. He claimed to have come from New Mexico with two girls and another youth. his companions were detained in McAllen.
Walter Beck, the big pitcher from Memphis, seems set for Brooklyn Dodgers mound duty after 15 innings of exhibition pitching. He allowed only two unearned runs, and yesterday blanked the Athletics with three hits in four innings.
Merchants face a flawed eight hour state law with a double negative. It bars any male employee from working more than eight hours in a day or 48 hours in a week, but its wording raises doubt about enforceability and liability for operators.

Washington March 29 AP The government oil conference adopted a report calling for broad federal oversight of the oil industry and urged President Roosevelt to seek Congress to ban interstate transport of oil and oil products produced in violation of state laws.
The chamber of commerce directors will gather at 6 30 PM for their regular monthly meeting at Nickson Coffee Shop.
The Mayors committee on employment relief in Baltimore unveils a plan to insure landlords rent payments for welfare-aided tenants. Landlords will receive rent based on property taxes and annual water rents plus 50 percent of the total, with weekly or monthly payments. The program targets between 1,000 and 16,000 families, though the exact number of landlords is not yet known.
