Berlin acts to enforce a boycott of Jews ahead of official April 1 start. City orders municipal purchases from nationalist merchants. Jewish shops faced picketing and closures. professors and attorneys barred from entries. Jewish students restricted. authorities warned of broader social exclusion.
Continued on page two. Woody Williams, a Negro killer, argued there wasn't money in the penitentiary fund to execute him. Officials considered a reform law and moved the chair to a state farm, but funds to move the chair were lacking. Gov Futrell granted a 30 day reprieve pending funds.
Roswell city school board at a special meeting discussed a maintenance fund cut of about 20 percent with some items facing up to 50 percent reductions. The board will reconvene Saturday night to finalize the plan and invite department heads to discuss teachers salaries. The total budget may drop from 172,787 to about 140,000, with the direct fund also reduced, and a budget hearing set for April 4 at Pecos Texas. Separately, landowners urged Texas to sue New Mexico in the U.S. Supreme Court over Pecos river water rights, seeking a fair division as the Red Bluff association pushes for a new compact satisfactory to Texas.
Roswell prepares for a Saturday Spring Frolic to celebrate better times with a day of humor and fun. The revised program eliminates broom ball for safety on pavement and lists bicycle races and a morning schedule from 9 30 to 10 50.
The six week sales managers training course for General Motors dealers in Roswell Carlsbad and Hobbs closed with the final examination. The average score for all participants was 96 percent the highest in the district and among the best in the nation. George Willograd Holmes Chevrolet Roswell topped all with 495 1 2 of 500 points. A permanent sales managers organization was formed with J R Lucas Carlsbad president Cs McNally Roswell vice president and B M Stedghill Hobbs secretary treasurer. Other top scorers included G C Birnie Hobbs J J Holmes Roswell and S C Wilborn Roswell.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to provide federal supervision of investment securities. He warned the public has suffered severe losses through unethical practices and proposed to invoke interstate commerce power to control new securities. He indicated hearings may begin soon and outlined plans for better oversight of property trades and bank and corporate practices.
A heavy wrapped package addressed to President Roosevelt triggered a bomb scare in the Wilmington Delaware post office. An employee, cautious in handling, brought it to Postmaster Abrahams who opened it and found a one pint copper beer mug. The item was resealed and sent to Washington.
Washington March 28 AP Broader powers by conservators operating state and national banks were granted today by Secretary Woodin in a regulation under the Presidents bank holiday. A conservator would determine how a bank operates and if deposits must be restricted. If a bank is closed the conservator could permit withdrawals up to 15 percent if the bank could remain solvent, subject to the Presidents proclamation on hoarding.
Paris reports the French government seeks to delay parliamentary debate on the 19 million debt instalment due last December to avoid hampering talks with Washington. A 204 million deficit is accepted in the 1933 budget. balance efforts are planned for next year amid strict conditions.
Washington announces a maximum 15 percent salary reduction for all federal workers effective next Saturday under the new economy act. The cut continues through June 30, restoring the Hoover furlough framework and aiming to save about $30 million in the current fiscal year.
San Pedro California reports George Bernard Shaw traveling toward New York aboard the Empress of Britain after an around the world cruise. Shaw left Southern California amid comments from Hollywood figures and a UCLA student who rode with him from Hearst Ranch to Malibu.
The Roswell Chamber of Commerce reports a double negative in an eight hour law copy causing it to state that proprietors may not work more than eight hours a day. The Record sent a request to The Associated Press to verify if the governor's signed law contains the error. Copies of the law are available at the Chamber of Commerce.
Phoenix March 23 AP Efforts to obtain a new trial for Winnie Ruth Judd convicted trunk murderers sentenced to hang April 14 will be delayed until the Arizona state board of pardons and paroles rules on clemency. Her attorneys said they spoke with Mooney's counsel but would not confirm pursuing a new trial on the same basis. Mooney had a ruling granting him a hearing on an unused murder indictment.
Washington report says Representative Byrns announced President Roosevelt has no objection to Senate amendments to the forest conservation bill. House labor committee planned a failed bid to add wage stipulations for single and married men, while Senate amendments leave wage levels to administration and remove set limits.
Chaves County Emergency Relief committee holds a 3:30 PM session at the Roswell Chamber of Commerce to review changes in federal relief fund management. An executive report outlines recommendations to curb rising demands and improprieties in relief allocations.
D N Pope superintendent of city schools spoke at the Brotherhood Club dinner held at First Christian Church annex last night at 6 36 pm. The program, chaired by George P Owens and led by Hugh M Huff, featured music by Russell Franzen and Daisy N Guffin. Thirty five men attended the flower decked three course dinner served by the Woman's Bible Class.
M E Bernet advertising manager of Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company, Denver, was in Roswell today to discuss local service and advertising opportunities with the company’s regional contacts.
Paul Wilmot gave an interesting discussion on legal limits of advertising at the weekly Roswell Advertising Club meeting. Claude Simpson offered an engaging talk on the new eight hour law and warned merchants to beware of fraudulent advertising schemes.
The Kiwanis Club asks for saleable articles to donate to a fundraising auction at Pecos Valley Drug Store or by phone. Housewives farmers produce men and store owners are urged to contribute. The auction, next Saturday April 1 during the Spring Frolic, supports feeding needy undernourished children through the Milk Fund.
Work on the Roswell post office remodeling is to be completed sometime next week. The project aims to modernize facilities and improve service efficiency for residents and staff.
W. W. McBride pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate liquor laws and drew a 500 dollar fine plus six months in jail before U. S. District Judge Colin Neblett. Co-defendants Jack and Anna Telman of Albuquerque were convicted. Telman sent to Leavenworth and both fined. McBride’s 2500 dollar bond was forfeited after a late arrival.
Santa Fe March 29 AP Judge Colin Nebiett sustained a motion to quash indictments against Alburtus the Seer and his manager McIntyre. They faced charges of using the mails to defraud radio listeners with claimed character analysis and predictions from Station KOB Albuquerque.
Clovis New Mexico March 29 The Clovis high school has adopted an intramural plan of athletic participation for students. The program emphasizes broad student involvement and organized sports activities within the school.
