ALBUQUERQUE AP Rep Steve Schiff New Mexico Republican and former five term congressman died at home at age 51 after more than a year-long fight with squamous cell skin cancer He left Washington March 23 1997 and conducted business from home as partial paralysis and slurred speech marked his condition Gov Gary Johnson ordered flags lowered in his honor Schiff who also served as Albuquerque district attorney was known for tough on crime views and for a pair of amendments on bankruptcy and juveniles in federal crime cases His colleagues praised his service and a new prosecutor building was named in his memory by the Bernalillo County Commission
