Artesia insurer Lawrence Goodell, 63, announced his candidacy for the District 33 New Mexico Senate. He has Roswell roots and ties to Artesia, including ownership roles in local business groups and service on the Artesia Chamber of Commerce and Art Council.
Federal prosecutors disclose a plan to call William Marchiondo as a witness in the David Norvell extortion case. They cite an $8,380.28 check paid by Marchiondo’s firm to Norvell in 1972 and say Norvell did not report it as income. Trial set for June 14 in Albuquerque.
The Postal Service lost the cremated remains of Bertram E. Williams sent to Arlington National Cemetery. The damaged urn package arrived empty. the cemetery has not interred him. The family and Watts criticized the search and insurance payout offered. A congressman condemned the postal handling as a major management blunder.
The U S Supreme Court ruling in Colorado confirmed state court jurisdiction for Indian water rights, aligning with the New Mexico Supreme Court decision. The Mescalero case over a $500000 pumping system and a 2700 acre foot lake at Inn of the Mountain Gods moves within Rio Hondo adjudication. No injunction motion is currently filed.
The 17th annual science and engineering fair opens Saturday at Cahoon Armory on the New Mexico Military Institute campus. Public viewing is from 3 30 to 6 p m with winners announced at 6 p m. Past winners Sublette Anderson and Dow return, among about 150 exhibits from Clovis Fort Sumner Lovington Penasco Portales Roswell and Texico.
Sam A. Moorehead a 50 year old rancher northeast of Roswell announced his candidacy for state senate District 31 covering Chaves and Roosevelt counties subject to the June 1 Republican primary. He vows fiscal conservatism and wants better funding for schools and highways. Moorehead has led in cattle groups and serves as livestock advisor to the Roswell district Bureau of Land Management. He and his wife Christine have three children Sam Jerry and Sandra all educated in Roswell.
