Talent Unlimited variety show entertains Fort Riley troops

University of Kansas students formed Talent Unlimited to entertain soldiers at Fort Riley over the weekend. Roswell participants Tom Hart and John Wolfe presented a decade by decade lineup including a Nelson Eddy Jeanette McDonald parody, Daisy, and The Perils of Pauline.

Worth trip to Albuquerque aids Acoma Pueblo relief drive

Allan Millison of Robinson Illinois led a truckload of goods donated by Robinson residents to Acoma Pueblo. The semitrailer carried food clothing bedding and other items to assist about 375 to 400 families affected by December snow damage. Millison and Helen Valle supervised unloading and planned the effort as an annual project with support from Clyde Hunt and local sponsors.

Explorer Ralph Plaisted Becomes Father in Arctic Trek

Expedition leader Ralph Plaisted and his wife welcomed a 7 pound 11 ounce boy at St John’s Hospital in St Paul. Plaisted, an insurance man, leads a push toward the North Pole still about 400 miles distant. A ham radio message conveyed the news.

Copper Wage Agreements Reach All Four Copper Producers

All four giant copper producers have reached tentative wage-hike agreements with unions. The unions say local issues still must be resolved at 28 mines and plants across 14 states before thousands of workers return. Phelps Dodge settled last week. ratifications remain pending for Anaconda American Smelting Kennecott and others.

Johnson Says U S Can Meet Home and World Obligations

President Johnson told a cheering AFL-CIO delegation that the United States has built strong foundations for society and must not let them be torn down by partisan elections. He cited poverty reduction, expanded education, health care for seniors, higher minimum wage, and safer workplaces as progress and urged labor support for upcoming laws.

Powell Ordered to Show Cause for Staying Free

Deposed congressman Adam Clayton Powell, back in Harlem after 18 months away, was ordered to show cause in court Tuesday why he should not be jailed pending appeal of a contempt conviction. Esther James, a Harlem widow, has long sued Powell over defamation claims. Powell returned Friday and was released on parole after pledging to appeal. The action was sought by James’ attorney Raymond Rubin.

Supreme Court Upholds Sentence for Burglary and Larceny

The New Mexico Supreme Court affirmed a Chaves County District Court ruling denying David C. Marquez's motion to vacate his sentence for burglary and larceny. The court also supported a McKinley County ruling for Anthony J. Milosevich and Mary Milosevich regarding a slip and fall at La Hacienda Lodge, ruling defendants need not have superior knowledge of icy conditions.

Wreckage found as 12 bodies recovered from airliner crash

Rescue teams found twelve victims and wreckage pieces eight miles off Rosslare as Aer Lingus Viscount crash near the Irish Sea remains unsolved. Coast guards police and ships including HMS Hardy and RAF Shackleton aided in the search amid a sinking weather front. Investigators seek wreckage to determine cause while the vessel had operated for about 12 years.

Task Force Splits Over Education Goals in New Mexico

The emergency task force on public schools in Santa Fe split into two camps as representatives from the NMEA and Albuquerque Classroom Teachers Association pressed for costs and funding. State officials estimated at least 45 million dollars, with 33 million for a foundation program and 12 million for a statewide kindergarten, though a kindergarten rollout could be postponed.
