The Mini Page explains police horses perform diverse duties in cities and on land. They assist crowd control during parades like St Patrick’s Day in New York City and may be used in search and rescue, hauling debris, or tackling steep terrain. Trainers desensitize horses to crowds, noises, and flying objects to keep them calm and responsive.
Bill Richey, former officer and trainer, explains that trainers expose horses gradually to frightening sights and sounds to reduce fear. Selecting calm, well aged horses between 8 and 10, he notes that pickup horses from rodeos often become ideal police mounts as they learn to accept moving objects and rider signals.
Richey explains horse vision differs from humans with limited colors and independent eyes. Police horses rest in stables when off duty, with outside pens for grazing or running, and they are well cared for to perform their jobs. If no longer fit for work, they may be retired, given to riders, or auctioned.
A catalog entry notes Julie Murray's "Crime-Fighting Animals" available on the Web via bit.ly/2kHP and at the library, priced at £41. The item signals a digital resource and a physical copy for patrons seeking animal crime fiction or investigative narratives.
The Mini Page thanks Bill Richey former police officer and founder and CEO of National Mounted Police Services for his help with this issue.
The note directs readers to a teaching resources page at bbs.amuniversal.com teaching guides.html for standards based activities to accompany the feature.
