Wool prices surge with prime grease wool around 1.45 per pound and clean wool near 2.80, doubling from last year and up sixfold from two years ago. The Roswell region including Chaves, Eddy and Lincoln counties gains from one of the state’s best clean wool crops.
In Saigon the Communists cancelled weekend prisoner releases after accusing Washington of repudiating a cease fire plan. They withhold names of the last 138 American POWs and linked freedom to continued troop withdrawals by the United States.
The Doran Wood Estate wool near Arabella, part of 15 000 pounds, would have fetched 1 40 a pound grease. Roswell Wool and Mohair offered 1 45 a pound (2 80 clean) for the clip. Jim Goodrum, co owner of the warehouse, notes a two cent a pound commission and calls this year's New Mexico wool crop among the best. Prices have risen to six times two years ago.
The General Appropriations Act includes a contingent 35000 for New Mexico Military Institute tied to School lands income. A typing error reads below 931000 instead of 971000, creating uncertainty over whether funds will be released. Rep. Colin McMillan notes possible governor correction or veto adjustments if legal.
Sen. Joseph Montoya announced that Comprehensive Health System Inc. will receive 1.7 million dollars in federal funding to continue its health program through the next fiscal year. The system serves Taos County and parts of southern Colorado. In Albuquerque the State Racing Commission will discuss 1973 legislation at its March 30 meeting.
L Patrick Gray said he discussed Senate hearings with White House counsel John W Dean but refused to submit dates and times of calls. On his ninth day of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Byrd pressed for records of phone conversations and subject matter.
In Portland Ed Carroll’s J H Market, Portland’s sole horsemeat shop, halted operations as demand surged after a front page Oregonian story about Mrs. Edward Rooney feeding her husband horsemeat. Carroll will reopen March 26 with extra help.
ITT senior vice president Edward J. Gerritty testified before a Senate subcommittee that ITT rejected a CIA devised plan to induce economic chaos in Chile in 1970. The five proposals included freezing credits and delaying deliveries, pressuring savings institutions, and cutting technical aid. Gerritty said ITT sought prompt payment for Chile Telephone Co. contracts and warned against expropriation threats from Allende.
Forecast calls for mostly fair conditions today and tonight with partly cloudy skies Friday. Scattered showers possible in the afternoon and evening with light morning winds turning moderate and gusty afternoons. Highs near 70 today and Friday’s high around 4 degrees, low 38 tonight.
A Roswell survey of 1 660 adults shows 92 percent say Roswell is friendly in 1973 up from 86 percent in 1966. Respondents cite adequate medical facilities but criticize limited shopping options and bus service. 78 percent find sales personnel courteous and 76 percent efficient.
