Al Stubbs recalls a brutal 1930s Roswell winter with 18 inches of snow and 28 below zero temperatures, coal furnace battles, and a pigeon coop hatchery in the basement. He mentions 1937 floods and a Saa Santos Juarez Jr. accident later reassessed as brake failure.

Watrous AP reports the Fort Union military prison, later a national monument, was completed in June 1868 and will reach 100 years old in June. Known for dense 4 by 8 foot cells and heavy ankle irons, the site on the Santa Fe Trail drew famed legends and many prisoners.
New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller said Nixon country lies in Nebraska and he will not campaign there or in most primaries if he runs, focusing on Oregon. He indicated he may enter Oregon’s May 28 primary, with a Friday decision deadline looming.

Former Marine Commandant David M. Shoup told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that a real U S victory in South Vietnam cannot pass. He warned that sending more troops won t assure success and North Vietnam can match U S forces, making a decisive win unlikely. He questioned treating the U S as aggressor and warned of future crises beyond Vietnam.
The Treasury says $750 million in gold moved to the Exchange Stabilization Fund in two transfers, $350 million last Friday and $400 million today, bringing year withdrawals to $1.5 billion and lowering usable US gold stocks to about $10.48 billion. The move ends the gold pool but keeps gold flow limited to intergovernmental transfers as private demand remains high.
State Police urged great caution as highways around Roswell remained open but snow and blowing snow created very poor visibility. U.S. 285 reported six to eight inches of snow with drivers advised to avoid certain routes toward Vaughn Clines Corner and Albuquerque.

The emergency task force on education in New Mexico considers how far to pursue a foundation based school program and separate financing. Sen. John Eastham says decisions ahead of April 15 will shape next year’s program and possible special legislative action.
