Swallows Delayed by Rain At San Juan Capistrano Return

Rain postpones the annual swallows return to San Juan Capistrano drawing hundreds of onlookers to the mission where pigeons and other birds replace the expected flock. Veteran observers expect the 6000 mile journey from Argentina to finish today as a flock was seen nearby. The Franciscan mission dates to 1776 and reports no religious significance attached to the birds return.

Israel approves historic Egyptian Israeli peace pact

The Israeli cabinet narrowly endorsed the nine article Egyptian Israeli treaty by a 15 to 2 vote. Defense Minister Ezer Weizman backed the agreement while Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon and Transport Minister Haim Landau opposed it. The pact would be signed in Washington next week and opens the Sinai border to facilitate talks on Palestinian autonomy with mutual movement rights.

UPI reports New Mexico congressman Harold Runnels checked into Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for tests to determine if cancer has developed in his lower back. A bone scan and biopsy were planned with possible treatment including a freezing method or minor surgery if cancer is confirmed.
