New Mexico House OKs 161.3 Million General Appropriation

The New Mexico House approved a 161.3 million general appropriations bill by a 50 to 18 vote. An added 700,000 for Kerr-Mills medical care was the sole floor amendment among four. A 6 percent blanket cut failed 50 to 22. Rep. Roy Davidson pushed the Kerr-Mills allocation to force Senate consideration.

Miss Harper Bound Over in Fatal Shooting Case

Alberta Harper, 46, of 419 E Alameda, bound over to District Court on a murder charge after police say she shot and killed former boyfriend Lionel Richards, 34, of 812 Medical Group, Walker AFB. She is jailed without bond as prosecutors outline a struggle over a .38 revolver with four bullets fired.

Girl Freed On $50 000 Bail Bonds

Laverne Hopper twenty one of Dexter charged with murder in the March 10 shooting of Charles Clements twenty four was freed from the county jail on a fifty thousand dollar bond posted by three area residents who pledged their property. Eleven offered, three qualified with Frank Peters Albert Watson and Wayne Adams posting the bond. The court requires property offered to exceed twice the bond and be free of mortgage. Hopper had been jailed since the shooting and was bound over to the district court after pleading innocent at a preliminary hearing.

Historic Voskhod 2 moonshot lands after 24 hour flight

Tass reports cosmonauts Pavel Belyayev and Alexei Leonov returned safely near Perm west of the Ural Mountains after a 24 hour 17 orbit mission. Leonov walked in space for about 10 minutes proving feasibility of space platforms en route to the moon.

Teachers Organization Bill Killed in New Mexico House

A Senate bill to bar oral discrimination by school boards against teachers for union membership died in the New Mexico House. Rep. Foster’s motion to bar federation attorney access was withdrawn after the attorney left. Robbery prompts checks report to Roswell citizens

Joe Shamas Sr. issued a request to Roswell residents who cashed checks on March 18 to report the name on the checks the amount and the bank drawn on so payment may be stopped. About $2,000 in checks were taken in the robbery.

Bandit Arrested Within 24 Hours Of Hold Up

Investigators said the man sought in the Thursday hold up was about 45, six foot two, 200 pounds, last seen wearing a grey jacket, slacks, sport shirt and hat. He boarded a train to leave town before police captured him. Shamas freed himself about ten minutes after the gunman left and notified police.

Alva Fritz and his brother Clarence Fritz begin a cross country trek from Astoria to Portland then toward California and along Route 66 to Baltimore. Clarence, 35, requires extensive skin grafts after a 1958 tree fall left him disabled. he travels strapped to a wheelchair pushed by Alva, with 400 pounds of gear and equipment.
