Former Vietnam POW Hughes Returns to New Mexico

Hughes Returns Home From Vietnam Prison Ordeal

Col. James Lindbergh Hughes arrived in Santa Fe after six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. Thousands welcomed him in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, with Gov. Bruce King presenting a New Mexico plaque. Hughes spoke of awaiting all POWs and MIAs, and planned rest to regain strength.

NMMI funds restored after Senate contingency action

The New Mexico Senate restored 35000 to the NMMI budget for fiscal 1974 on a contingency basis after it was cut earlier in the week. The $3,035,900 General Appropriations Act includes funds from the permanent fund and was approved 34 to 0. Senate actions also funded the Chaves County Mental Health Center, created a handicapped employment commission, and allocated 150000 for handicapped access renovations at state universities.
