In Indochina the siege of Dien Bien Phu intensifies as French defenders report heavy Vietminh assaults with Chinese artillery support. French losses are given as 2,500 Vietminh killed and wounded, while the garrison remains intact though strained.
Chaves County Red Cross total climbed to 14494.55 on a 17246 quota. Walker AFB contributed 1666 on first remittance. Roswell area firms and individuals were still outstanding. Campaign chairman Will Lawrence urged full participation and hoped late reports would meet the target.
Reading shows temperatures from 2 p m yesterday to 11 a m today with highs near 55 and lows around 40. Expect cloudiness and warmer southerly winds tonight and tomorrow with a high near 65 and mild night.
In Oakland Maryland Roy Dillworth a 32 year old farmhand weighing 140 pounds is credited with saving Mr and Mrs Bell Friend during a fire that destroyed their home about 18 miles north of Oakland Fire Chief Emroy Bolden noted Dillworth guided Mrs Friend from an upstairs room where she collapsed and then carried the 62 pound invalid husband to safety.
Chaves County Council of Garden Clubs mails a March 13 letter to Roswell city and county commissioner candidates. It urges replies within three days on using Court House grounds for extra parking, noting urgency and promising continuation on page six.
Senate panel disputes over McCarthy led to demands for a public hearing and a larger inquiry. Sen. Mundt urged neutral oversight while the Army accused Cohn and Carr of improper tactics. McCarthy planned a four day speaking tour and refused to pause hearings.
In Chicopee masses, Mrs Rene Cote took her son Armand to a doctor's office for a tonsil checkup. When Armand balked, she opened her mouth to show the doctor a throat exam. The doctor glanced and said the mother will need tonsil surgery too.
A Continental Airlines Convair 340 en route El Paso to Tulsa made a forced landing four minutes after takeoff from Midland. Pilot H. E. Persing and one passenger were slightly hurt. other crew and eight passengers were shaken. The left wing tore off as the plane slid a half mile across pasture on the Scharbauer Cattle Co. ranch. Fire crews cordoned the site. no fire occurred and gasoline fumes filled the air.
About 65 members of the Chaves County Farm and Livestock Bureau heard Carl Nicholas report on his Washington trip at the regular monthly meeting at the Berrendo School. 4-H Club members presented a skit on 4-H history and purpose. George Stockton discussed castor bean planting in diverted cotton acreage. Oscar Kunkel emphasized growing Farm Bureau membership. R K Harlan announced a March 18 meeting at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss underground water problems in New Mexico.
Charley Battiste of Carlsbad won an area Toastmasters speech contest Saturday night but was mistakenly listed as a candidate for lieutenant governors. He is the convention approved Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of New Mexico.
Mrs. Lawrence Mitchell of Watertown New York, aged 45, has given birth to her 20th child in the span of 26 years, highlighting a remarkable family of large brood.
Roswell voters go to polls to decide a 215000 bond request from the Board of Education. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Funds will finish elementary school construction and build a new school at South Washington Avenue and Chisum Street. Polling place is the Junior High School. Any real property owner may vote.
Senate Rules Committee voted 5-4 to urge the Senate to unseat Sen. Chavez of New Mexico over alleged irregularities in the 1952 election. If Chavez is removed, Gov. Mechem would appoint a Republican successor, potentially shifting Senate control. Official returns showed Chavez ahead. the panel found ballots with serious errors but did not fault Chavez personally.
FBI agents trapped Wendell Ringholz a Northridge man accused of extortion by bomb threat against Max Factor Jr. He arranged a $30,000 ransom after posing as Factor in disguise. Ringholz was arrested after picking up a dummy bundle of cash in the San Fernando Valley during week long negotiations.
Eisenhower opposes the Democratic tax cut plan and mobilizes Republicans to resist. House and Senate leaders forecast a tight vote as Democrats push to raise exemptions from 600 to 700 or 800, while GOP fears bigger deficits and inflation.
Chaves County will be represented at the 16th annual Southeast New Mexico Education Association convention in Hobbs on Friday March 19. Main speaker Dr William R Ross president of Colorado College of Education will discuss The Time of Our Lives. Local participants include Supt Carrol White Mrs Lucille Parker Ruth Bailey Eddie Hinman and Phil Hosford with topics on parent teacher conferences.
