Walker plans legal challenge to stay as temporary county clerk

Joyce Walker, a Democrat, says she will seek a court ruling to confirm her status as the duly appointed and acting Chaves County clerk after a disputed appointment followed the resignation of Earlene Smith. County commissioners appointed Bernice Dilley to replace Smith. Walker contends state law limits appointments to one.

Rowland L Tessier of Roswell 43 announced at the Roswell Sertoma Club luncheon that he will run for New Mexico House of Representatives District 59. He chairs Tesco Signs Inc and has past leadership roles with several business and civic groups. District 59 covers Roswell west side and Dexter.

Plane crash in Tehran kills 29 on Danish airliner

An airliner carrying 96 people burst into flames while taxiing for takeoff at Tehran airport. Civil Aviation Director Hushang Arbabi said 29 killed, 67 rescued. Fire blamed on hydraulic fault. several conflicting casualty figures reported earlier. Prime Minister Abass described rescue efforts and observed cockpit detachment near the wreck.

Daley Welcomes Nixon in Chicago During Watergate Era

Mayor Richard J. Daley greeted President Nixon at O'Hare and drove him to the Conrad Hilton for a question and answer session with the Executives Club. Daley said Watergate is not the issue in the 1974 elections while predicting Democratic gains and noting costs as the main concern. Nixon planned a Nashville birthday trip with Pat and a Grand Ole Opry dedication.

Roswell Mayor Honored by Interior Office Officials

Roswell Mayor William F. Brainerd received a commemorative plaque from the U S Department of Interior Office of Saline Water for six years as mayor in Roswell ceremonies at the Chamber of Development and Commerce. Walter L Barnes Jr praised Brainerd for cooperation with the Roswell Test Facility and the city securing funding through 1975 for the brackish water desalinization plan. A similar honor was given to Mayor-elect Jerry N Smith who received a water pin.

Santa Fe AP Gov King used 30 line item vetoes on the 1974 general appropriations act drawing protests from Legislative Finance Committee. Linear accelerator open house and ribbon cutting set

The mayor and mayor elect William F Brainerd and Jerry N Smith will take part in a ribbon cutting at St Marys Hospital Saturday at 3 p m for the 150000 radiation machine. Open house Sunday 2 to 4 p m invites residents to view the 110000 building housing the unit and meet Sister Mary Theresa and hospital trustees. The accelerator, booked to Rosewood Hospital Houston by computer for distant treatment, has been in operation about two weeks.
