Johnson Plans Meet at Guam on Viet War

Mrs. A N Spencer Named to Spring Industrial Board

Gov David Cargo appointed Mrs A N Spencer of Carrizozo to the Spring Industrial School Board. Mrs Spencer is active in Carrizozo civic life and wife of Dr A N Spencer. A native of Denver she moved to Carrizozo in 1947 with her husband and they have three children.

Seven City Students Share Science Fair Awards

Roswell area students topped a city science fair with about 100 additional awards presented by Dr. George Fischbeck. Winners span grades four through eight from Valley View Monterrey St Peters Pueblo and El Capitan with top honors in plant biology animal biology earth and physical categories and multiple tied placements in sixth grade.

D Day signaler Rear Adm Yeager dies in Great Lakes fire

Rear Adm. Howard A. Yeager 61, who gave the signal for the WWII D Day invasion, perished in a Great Lakes Naval Center house fire. His wife Mary Jean 60 and two Waves, Laura Jean Martin 21 and Lora Mae Garrett 25, also died from smoke inhalation. Yeager was commandant of the 9th Naval District and scheduled to retire April 1 to join Zenith Radio Corp.

Aston Named to NMSU Board of Regents in New Mexico

Governor Cargo announced Reginaldo Rogers Aston of Roswell will join the New Mexico State University Board of Regents replacing Robert O. Anderson whose term expired. Also named were Walter E. Bruce Jr. to the Public Service Commission and Dan Ely to the Springer Boys' School board following resignations and eligibility issues. Fire fatalities at Glenview NAS claimed Rear Adm. Fowler and injured his wife Mederies. investigation boards convened at Great Lakes as plans for Adm Yeager’s farewell emerged.

Two Soldiers From Oakland Die in Vietnam

Robert Skarphol and Joseph Cagnacci met through the draft while attending Chabot College in Oakland. Both trained in the same unit, the 39th Infantry, 3rd Battalion, Company A, 9th Division, earning specialist fourth class. They arrived in Vietnam together and were killed in a March 8 mortar barrage in the Mekong Delta, honored earlier with the Combat Infantryman Badge on February 15.
