King backs House right to work constitutional measure

Gov. Bruce King supports a House proposal to submit a modified right to work question to voters. The measure, sponsored by Rep. John Lee Thompson, would prohibit mandatory membership or payments to any social political labor or religious group as a condition of employment. It does not ban union formation or collective bargaining.

Carter Sadat begin pivotal Cairo talks for peace

President Carter arrived in Cairo to a massive welcome and opened crucial discussions with Anwar Sadat amid signals of difficulty in achieving a peace with Israel. Anti abortion bill approved by Santa Fe House panel

The House Judiciary Committee approved a denuded anti abortion bill in Santa Fe, removing parental and spousal notice and much of the fetus description while retaining written maternal consent and a 24 hour waiting period. The measure, originally by Rep Silas Garcia with a substitute by Rep Raymond Sanchez, shifts the bill away from earlier harsher provisions and reduces violations to petty misdemeanors. Rep Paul Kelly Jr. led opposition to broader notice requirements, and critics accused chair Rep George Fettinger of curbing debate.
