Seven die in bus truck crash on Texas bridge

A Greyhound bus en route from San Francisco to Miami collided with a jackknifed rental truck on a narrow U.S. 290 bridge near Bakersfield, 30 miles east of Fort Stockton. Seven killed, many burned, with 20 injured taken to Fort Stockton hospital and two to Iraan. The crash halted traffic while investigators identified victims and responders treated the wounded.

Bus Tragedies on Narrow Bridges Echo Each Other

AP reports two deadly crashes on narrow wood bridges on US 60 84 near Fort Sumner and Fort Stockton. A December Fort Sumner bus crash killed 19 Texans with passengers recounting screams and chaos. The later Fort Stockton collision involved a fire and a similar night setting.

Roswell Youth Dies in U S 70 Crash East of Tularosa

A 19 year old Roswell man Fred Torrez died when his 1966 Chevrolet Malibu left U S 70 east of Tularosa and struck a dirt embankment. State police report the crash occurred between 2 and 6 30 a m and liquor was involved with no seat belts worn.

KC-135 Collision at Lockbourne Air Base Kills Two

In dense fog two KC135 aerial refueling jets collided while taxiing to a runway at Lockbourne Base near Columbus Ohio. Authorities report two crewmen dead and one injured in the early morning crash.

First standby draft lottery drawn for 19 year olds

Washington AP reports the first standby draft lottery assigned number one to those born June 27 1954. The draw began at 10 03 a m EST and finished at noon with capsule 95 and below classified. Pepitone noted most will remain in H holding with no contact unless needed next year and the nation relies on volunteers for armed forces.

C47 crashes kill Golden Knights crew near Silk Hope

A World War II era C47 transporting the Army parachute team crashed in a central North Carolina cornfield. At least 14 people died, including 11 team members, two pilots, and a crew chief. No survivors reported. The crash occurred about 9 a.m. en route from Fort Bragg to Overland Park.
