Irrigation futures grim for eastern New Mexico farmers
Eastern New Mexico farmers face a drying groundwater supply as Curry and Roosevelt counties see rapidly falling water tables. Energy costs threaten irrigation viability, with projections showing acreage shrinking from 200,000 in Curry and 136,000 in Roosevelt in 1976 to tens of thousands by 2020. The federal study funded by a 6 million appropriation will examine the regional water depletion impacts, with results due in 1980.
