A three building fire in Santa Rosa destroyed 4 percent of the business district after starting in the Club Cafe near 3 15 a m and being controlled by 6 30 a m Smoke damaged a curio shop east of the Rio Bar as volunteers fought for water and containment.
Morgan Nelson filed his petition today as a Democratic candidate for state representative from Chaves County.
A B 50 medium bomber on a Walker Air Force Base ramp was largely burned after a fuel system malfunction sparked a fire. Ground crew stood by for maintenance parts as fire teams from Walker and Roswell answered. Three men were treated for minor injuries and expect discharge today.
O B Johnson state alcoholism director calls for a large turnout at an Open AA meeting Sunday from 2 to 5 pm at Pecos Valley Lodge in Roswell. A New York City speaker will define AA and discuss alcoholism as a disease and actions possible, offering residents a first look at New Mexico's second AA center, delayed by funding.

Morgan Nelson 34 filed his petition yesterday as a Democratic candidate for representative in the State Legislature from Chaves. The East Grand Plains farmer, born in Artesia, is a Roswell High School 1937 graduate with a 1941 NM A&M College mechanical engineering degree. He served in WWII with the 9th Air Force and in the Korean Conflict at Walker AFB and remains a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve. He also farms near Lake Arthur, served in the 19th and 20th Legislatures from 1949 to 1950, chaired aeronautics and banks committees, and sat on appropriations, finance, taxation and revenue panels. He is on the state board of educational finance and its executive committee, active in Roswell civic groups, and with wife Joyce has two children, Margo 14 and Ann two.
Harold Kenney age 56, formerly of Roswell, died in a Raymondville Texas hospital last Saturday from lung cancer. He had run a boating business at Port Mansfield and previously served as advertising manager for the Record in 1944 1945 before joining Houston Lumber Co.
Roswell firemen made two runs yesterday. At 6 am they tackled a two–room unit fire at El Rancho Motel 2100 N Main with attic damage. They used two trucks a booster and 450 feet of 2 inch hose and returned by 7 45 am. The second call came at 7 52 pm to Greenhaven Courts trailer fire 612 E Second St.
Four Puerto Rican Nationalists charged with wounding five congressmen in Monday's shooting spree face arraignment today. Indictments include assault with intent to kill and assault with a dangerous weapon. Defendants Lolita Lebron Rafael Cancel Miranda Andres Figueroa Cordero and Irving Flores Rodriguez are all New York City residents.
A mortar shell dropped accidentally during a training lecture within the 1st Marine Division in Korea killed six Marines and wounded 30 yesterday. The incident was announced by U.S. military authorities.

City election set for April 6. County primary candidates filed include Earl H Corn for County Commissioner 3 Fred H Dilley Jr for County Commissioner 1 and Robert O Anderson for state representative.
Robert P. Wood, 28, of Artesia died when his car was struck by a San Fe freight train at a grade crossing south of the city. The car was carried about a half mile. The death is listed as the 73rd highway fatality of the year by State Police.
