Artesia voters approve prohibition by 147 to 66 in a special election. City Council will pass an ordinance banning liquor sales under emergency clause, taking effect as soon as possible. Only corporate limits voted. women campaigned strongly aiding the dry victory.
The Commercial Club of Roswell arranged activities for a 100 strong Albuquerque trade excursion next Wednesday. Committees will marshal private autos to tour the farming district, meeting at South Spring at 3 pm, then return to Roswell for an 8 pm reception and lunch at the club.
City council votes to approve three ordinances addressing sidewalk construction street extension and public safety measures. Officials say the steps will improve pedestrian access and traffic flow while enhancing neighborhood safety across multiple districts.
Regular session chaired by Mayor Stockard with members Bell Church Johnson Kinsinger Robinson Whiteman and Wyllys. The body left Proposition for incoming council and discussed extending time on lighting tests and an ordinance regulating hauling rates. Police fines for February totaled $65 as patients’ instruction cards were approved for printing.
At a Roswell Democratic Central Committee meeting on March 3 1908 Dr C M Yater's office ordered a city primary election for ward council seats board of education and central committeeman. Election run from 8 am to 5 pm on March 17 1908 to nominate candidates for city offices. Horrible catastrophe follows burning of public school in Cleveland.
A Lakeview public school blaze in Roswell New Mexico caused a panicked crush of 400 to 500 students as exits clogged with smoke. Reports say many children perished with 60 bodies recovered by early afternoon and dozens more injured, while authorities and factories nearby assisted in rescue efforts.
Sheriff C L Ballard reported a block of business houses burned to the ground Monday in Melrose after a five o clock morning fire began in a grocery. The blaze spread rapidly through hotels restaurants and saloons with no adequate fighting means. Insurance covered about half the loss.
