Crowds gathered at Martin Luther King Jr Park to celebrate Juneteenth with music and food as Daniel Medina and classmates from Albuquerque demonstrate karate. The Rev William Horn delivered a sermon while Crystal Mullins Kinfolk performed and four year old Laker Slayton enjoyed sculpting dough.
Two wildfires in parched forests merged Sunday into a single 300000 acre blaze threatening Show Low and prompting mass evacuations. Officials said the merged fire should ease attack with one perimeter, but strong winds and exploding trees kept danger. At least 185 homes burned across 479 square miles with hundreds saved as Show Low and nearby Pinetop Lakeside residents fled en masse.
Roswell residents face a clash between local fireworks ordinances and state rules. Fire Marshal Mike Puckett says enforcement creates unpopularity and urges aligning city law with New Mexico statutes. Firefighters will patrol stands for illegal sales and purchases despite disagreements with the ordinance.
