New Mexico Plans 7.5 to 8 Million Highway Program

Governor outlines July oiling and grading projects across 100 miles, including Colmar Wagon Mound and routes near Hot Springs Caballo and San Antonio. Samson declines comment on 15 percent rate cut letter

H. E. Samson, manager of The Southwestern Public Service Company, says he has received a letter from May or H. F. Smyris requesting a fifteen percent electric rate reduction by July first. He offers no comment, wanting time to consider the matter. The full letter is printed in another story in The Record.

Bratton to Assume Judiciary Post in New Mexico

Albuquerque dispatch reports United States Senator Sam Bratton will resign from the Senate to become judge of the tenth federal circuit court of appeals. He will take the oath this afternoon in Santa Fe, after notifying Gov. Arthur Seligman. Bratton’s career includes earlier resignations to accept higher offices, and his move leaves New Mexico without a senator until a successor is named.

Veteran council to host senator on veterans bill tale

In Albuquerque the all veterans council greets Sen. Bronson next Thursday night to explain veterans legislation passed by Congress in a special session. He will be principal speaker at a gathering likely at the national guard armory.

Railroads set reduced rates for drought districts

Washington AP June 24. Santa Fe Railway will cut freight charges for livestock and feed into drought regions across Texas Oklahoma Kansas Colorado and New Mexico. Rock Island and Burlington lines join in the plan, which halves hay rates and cuts other feed and livestock charges by about one third. A joint agreement is needed and a Chicago meeting Monday is expected to finalize the plan.

Indian Council to Be Independent of Control

Albuquerque June 24 The all Pueblo council of Indian Pueblos in New Mexico should remain independent of official control Indian commissioner John Collier advised Pueblo officials He said he would attend a summer meeting but not place the council under the United States Pueblo Council or the interior department He also said the special reforestation work on southwestern reservations has no army implications and that some Indians feared enrolment in the army.

Washington reports a massive highway program will begin July 1 as part of Roosevelt’s re employment and recovery plan. States receive 409 million dollars via the public works board with 30 hour weeks and convict labor allowed. Projects spread nationwide with machinery limited to hand work on site.

Sixty cotton growers from East Ground Plains met at the school house last night and nearly unanimously backed the Government acreage reduction plan. They expressed willingness to sign contracts as soon as the blanks arrive, with county agent J R Thomas and others explaining the plan after a Las Cruces conference this week.

In Cincinnati on June 24 AP dispatch reports that the Disabled American Veterans may not seek a cash payment at their 1933 convention. National Adjutant Vivian D. Corbly said the group would not press for cash this year, a first in its history, while opposing the administration’s push to trim veterans disability funding.

Golf teams from Clovis Carlsbad Artesia and Roswell travel to Roswell Country Club tomorrow. Two Arrested for Santa Fe Robbery

Santa Fe June 24 AP R E Burrus and J W Dunaway were arrested by Sheriff Jesus M Baca and Undersheriff Fo oy Beredinelli on charges of breaking into the Lafayette Inn with intent to commit larceny. Burrus faces a $30,000 bond as he appeals a voluntary manslaughter conviction for the slaying of Santa Fe Police Chief Apolonio Pino. Dunaway testified in Burrus defense. Burrus allegedly said stolen articles were taken due to unpaid inn rent.

State Bar selects Albuquerque for Aug convention

The State Bar executive committee chose Albuquerque as the site for the state convention on August 22. Judge Milton J. Helmick was asked to serve as program chairman. Robbery at Kenna Post Office Stolen Cash and Gasoline

The Kenna New Mexico post office was broken into between three and three thirty this morning. The safe was hammered open and $70 in currency and $12 in stamps stolen along with nine gallons of gasoline from Price Crume's filling station. Three sheets of 3 cent stamps and coins were taken. Thieves were heard but not seen. Chaves county officers alerted.
