Powder Can Church near Vaughn Built From Empty Cans
Pioneers near Vaughn New Mexico built a small church using empty powder cans and dynamite boxes from the local quarry. In 1910 volunteers filled cans with dirt and rock, stacked them in double rows for walls, plastered crevices with adobe, and capped the roof with wagon sheets supported by railroad steel. The 1910 dedication followed by a bell hung from a steel rail marked the crude but cherished church that hosted services, weddings, and Sunday school for the settlement.
