Senators Heinrich and Lujan visit Roswell to back fire evacuees
U S Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan, both Democrats from New Mexico, visited Roswell on Friday to pledge continued federal aid for residents displaced by the South Fork and Salt wildfires. They spoke at a press conference outside the St Godfrey Athletic Center on the NMMI campus, toured shelters, and commended Red Cross relief efforts as nearly 9,000 people fled Rui doso and surrounding areas. As of Saturday the fires had killed two people and damaged about 1,400 structures.

UNM med students gain Roswell experience in summer program
Three University of New Mexico medical students An Phan Natalia Torrez and Devon Santisteban spend part of their summer shadowing doctors at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell. The trio participate in UNMs BA/MD degree program aimed at addressing New Mexicos physician shortage. Through the program they shadow practitioners and volunteer, with guaranteed advancement to UNM Medical School after completing undergrad. Torrez and Santisteban are Albuquerque natives. Phan was born in Vietnam and moved to Albuquerque as a child.

The American Red Cross supports 17 shelters aiding people displaced by the South Fork and Salt fires and the Ruidoso flood. Two hundred forty five residents have stayed overnight across sites with 114 volunteers assisting five shelters. See HELP, Page A2.
