Roosevelt seeks Nicaragua survey for canal and highway
President Roosevelt asked Congress to approve a 200000 dollar survey for a barge canal and highway across Nicaragua. Officials estimate total outlays could reach 25000000 to 40000000 dollars for a Central American project tied to hemispheric defense, with army engineers to begin once financing is arranged. The plan differs from a Pacific Caribbean waterway estimate of 1440000000 dollars, while a Panama Canal expansion proposal totals 277000000 dollars for wartime fleet passage.
