Federal jobs for Democrats soon, amid merit tests

Washington June 22 ap Deserving Democrats crowd the federal pie as thousands of jobs may be allocated after President Roosevelt returns from vacation. Appointments to collectors of internal revenue district attorneys marshals and customs collectors are expected early under new acts. Congressman Almon Dies in Washington at 73

Representative Edward R B Almore age 73 from Tuscumbia Alabama died of heart disease in a Washington hospital. He chaired the House roads committee and was a leading proponent of government operation of Muscle Shoals. He represented Alabama's eighth district for nearly twenty years.

Government plan for reducing cotton acreage details

J R R Thomas, Chaves County Agricultural Agent, returned from a conference at State College Las Cruces with details on the government plan for cotton acreage reduction. Attendance included H L Gifford, Fred Nelson, and C N Moore. Acreage reduction is optional with two plans offered, including a cash rental benefit per retired acre and an option to buy cotton from the secretary of agriculture at six cents per pound. State Board of Finance lifts banking rules for public funds

Santa Fe June 22 AP the New Mexico board of finance suspends interest and bond requirements to place public monies with depositaries under a state emergency banking law. If no bank accepts funds treasurers may deposit with the First National Bank Santa Fe. Valencia County holds money in vault after theft reports. other items include sewer bonds and state purchases.

Fed Labor Signs of Cheerfulness in Work Recovery

The American Federation of Labor reports 629000 back to work in April with May gains smaller but unclear as a start of recovery. Unemployment fell to 12,730,000 in April, and the federation notes improved purchasing power as essential, banking on the recovery act to move employment faster.

Banker Mitchell Is Acquitted On All Charges

New York June 22 AP Charles Mitchell former chair man of the National City Bank was acquitted today on all counts in the income tax evasion indictment. The jury found he illegally failed to report a 1929 payment of 666666.67 from the National City Company and made sham stock sales to avoid taxes. The verdict came after three jury instructions and hours of deliberation with Mitchell emotional as not guilty was read.

Heavy rainfall drenches New Mexico towns last night

The storm soaked most of the state after a week of heat and dust storms. Dona Ana and nearby areas faced floods and hail. Arroyos flooded streets and bridges, with Elephant Butte workers draining water overnight. Las Cruces and Socorro saw rail delays as high waters threatened tracks.

The Chaves County School Board meeting on transportation problems and bus routes was postponed due to missing information from Santa Fe. The meeting is expected next week, with transportation committee members John Tweedy and Fla L. Austin set to confer with the board.

P V Gas Co Is Asked To Give Accounting

Harry C. Carter, a Pecos Valley Gas Company minority stockholder, filed suit in Carlsbad New Mexico seeking a full accounting of the firm and associates. He accuses officials of mismanagement regarding dealings with Southern Union Gas and Consumers Natural Gas and seeks injunctions to prevent asset diversion and a court ruling on $359,000 debentures. No hearing date was set.

Hobbs Oil Price Up To 30 Cents Monday

Santa Fe AP. Humble Oil Co raised Hobbs field oil price to 30 cents per barrel on Monday from 20 cents. The boost could add about 20,000 dollars to Hobbs field income based on latest production. No other field price increases were advised. Roswell area had previously seen over 100 percent rise.
