Damages from floods in the Hondo Valley and northeast New Mexico reach about 13 million dollars. Private losses in the Hondo Valley are pegged at 7 million with 5 million in fruit crops plus 415 thousand to public facilities. Authorities assess road and bridge damage, with river valley isolation and looting concerns under control.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gonzales of 314 E. Reed died today after a three car collision one half mile east of State Road Two and East McGaffey. Passengers and drivers suffered minor injuries and were treated at St. Mary's Hospital. Police say Manuel Luna ran a stop sign and caused the crash.
Resolutions from New York proposed to the American Medical Association House of Delegates would authorize doctors to boycott federal Medicare programs. Committee review is underway and selected measures will face a general session vote Wednesday.
Government officials contractors and sub contractors and a local architectural firm will be represented at a pre construction conference on June 30 in the office of Rowland and Associates. The meeting will map out procedures for the Roswell federal building to be located between Fifth and Sixth Streets on Richardson. Construction is expected to begin immediately after. The contract for building was awarded to John C Cornell Inc of Clovis by the General Services Administration in Washington. Local architect Hugh Rowland noted the bid of 1 479 502 would have expired Tuesday. He said he learned the bid had not been officially signed during a Washington visit and after contacting U S Senator Joseph Montoya the bid was officially signed Monday afternoon, one day before expiration.
Tributes flowed for Bernard M Baruch financier and adviser who died at 94 at his home in New York City He left a fortune after starting from a 3 a week job and later funded major medical research education and charity He advised presidents from Wilson to Eisenhower and helped shape wartime finance and atomic energy policy.
A one car crash five miles north of Dexter on U. S. 285 left Fred M. Wells 17 with cuts and bruises and Wayne Wilson 16 with possible arm and leg injuries. Both were taken to St. Marys Hospital. Bruce Parker 15 escaped injury. Police say Wells lost control and the car overturned.
Flooding on the southwest fringe of Roswell is blamed on a man made diversion dam and a ditch from the Hondo River. City officials closed the ditch to stop further overflow as residents consider possible legal action against rancher Byron Brown. Brown denies wrongdoing and cites Bureau of Reclamation projects and Twin Dams headgates as factors.
Several thousand Kansans fled homes as the Arkansas River flood surged through central and southwest Kansas. About 3,000 evacuees were moved earlier, with 1,800 at Dodge City, 800 at Kinsley, and 300 in Garden City. National guardsmen tracked the crest as Gov. Avery called it a 100 year flood. Damages in Denver reached 44 million as waters receded and crews assessed losses.
In Roswell a 26 year old man Raymond Sedillo faces involuntary manslaughter charges in a Saturday night hit and run that killed Ida Jane Bitz 35, who died after a car struck her and left the scene in the 100 block of South Beech Ave. The vehicle was found at Ash and Brown Road. Sedillo and his brother Joe Sedillo were arrested near the abandoned car and additional charges of aggravated battery and aggravated assault were filed related to a stabbing incident involving the two brothers.
A fire damaged parts of the Neon Firm building Saturday night with an estimated 150000 in losses. Cleanup continued Sunday and today as Roland Tessier said repairs may take 30 days and the firm planned to stay open. An investigation by the fire department is ongoing and insurance coverage was described as substantial.
The Roswell Council of Churches met at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Sunday for an organizational service. Rev Wishard Lemons Jr presided and installed officers led by Rev William Hartman as president and Robert Hopkins as vice president with Mrs. Adam Gomez secretary and Fr James Kirkpatrick treasurer.
