Casper Wyoming Bill Jones forgot his rod on a North Platte River trip. He rigged a pole from driftwood and baling wire and caught four husky trout while Tom Cooper using modern gear caught none.
A car leaving U S 180 near Santa Rita dashed into a canyon at 2 am, killing 19 year old Rudy Valerio and injuring five others. Driver Roland Gomez, 20, was in critical condition. four others from Santa Rita suffered minor injuries. The crash left the vehicle end over end, with the death tally on New Mexico highways reaching 143 for the year.
Washington AP reports Irvin C. Scarbeck former second secretary at the U S Embassy in Warsaw was indicted by a federal grand jury for giving classified information to agents of Communist Poland He declined to post a 50 000 bond and remains in district jail awaiting trial date set later
Florence Jacobs, age 22 months, defies library rules to receive Card No 4536 after a meeting with Mayor Armellino. She already knows 300 words, reads 60 seventh-grade level books, and recites space facts from rockets to planetary satellites. She aspires to be a mother.
Roswell optometrist Dr T E Boggs selected as Area 3 governor in District 23 of Toastmasters International. He is past president of Noonday Toastmasters Club 3109 and active in Toastmasters Club 477. Boggs is a longtime Roswell resident and Honorary Colonel for Kentucky.
Thieves struck over Sunday and Monday netting about 228 dollars in items and cash. The losses include a Quick-Charge portable battery charger from Valley Chevrolet, a nickel plated .22 pistol from Paul Gilman, a spare tire and wheel from Carroll Shanks, a billfold with cash and cards from Mrs. George Clow, and a Delco 6 volt battery from Gregory Stone.
Three Lea County ranchers purchased seven tracts of state land at a Lea County Courthouse sale. W. M. Snyder of Lovington bought 160 acres at 110 dollars per acre and 1038.08 acres at 28.81 dollars per acre, south of Lovington. U. D. Sawyer of Crossroads acquired 1920 acres at 11.35 dollars per acre and 959.9 acres at 7.35 dollars per acre, east of Crossroads. Zack Taylor of Tatum bought 200 acres at 9.60 dollars per acre, 80 acres at 41 dollars per acre, and 319.4 acres at 36 dollars per acre, northeast of Tatum.
Adolf Eichmann testified he did not realize the Nazis planned to exterminate Jews when he joined in 1932 and said by the time the extermination began he could not influence it. He said he was powerless and condemned Israel’s capture of him in Argentina, insisting the Nazi system bore responsibility for the pogroms and the war crimes.

Testimony describes checks totaling thousands dollars for alleged debts and equipment rentals linked to Flying C Ranch road work between 1957 and 1958, plus related testimony about a 1946 pickup truck and a truck shovel machine ownership.
Five airmen from Walker AFB paid 15 fines for drunk and disorderly conduct after a sheriff and state police raid of the Puss N Boots Restaurant on Artesia Highway. About 30 people were in a dance hall. 17 cases of beer were seized. The airmen, all with the 6th OMS, were jailed Sunday and paid fines Monday afternoon. Deputies Harris Messer Anderson and state police officers Holder Young assisted.
Castro faces noon Friday deadline to accept 500 farm tractors as full ransom for 1,214 April invasion prisoners. The Tractors for Freedom Committee set the terms and warned that failure to comply ends the deal. Officials note the cost estimate at 12 to 3.12 million, far below Castro's 28 million demand.
Rain drifts across New Mexico with Tarnish of margins. Highs reached 99 in Roswell and 83 in Raton while lows hovered around 51 to 72 across the state. Weather bureau forecasts expect northwest fair skies, northeast partly cloudy with isolated storms, and southern thundershowers.

Washington AP A Bureau of Mines forecast for 1961 oil output sits at 7,144,000 barrels daily, up 1.5 percent from 1960, while total oil demand is seen at 10,036,000 barrels daily, up 1.6 percent from 1960. The prior December estimate had projected 7,210,000 barrels daily and 10,054,000 daily demand.
Two people sustained minor injuries in a two car crash at the Delaware and Highland intersection about 6 23 p m Monday. Renata Ann Doust 26 of 903 N Delaware drove a car that struck a mail truck driven by Martin A Domitrovich 43 of 2811 S Lea. The impact pushed the mail truck onto a rock wall around Cahoon Park and the Doust car rested against the wall. Fire crews were dispatched at 6 38 to wash down gasoline leaking from a punctured line in the mail truck.
A special Planning and Zoning Commission session is planned for 7 30 p m in the City Hall City Council chamber to discuss agenda items. The meeting moves forward with local planning matters and potential code changes.
Charles H. Ward, 36, of Hollywood New Mexico, held on $10,000 bond in Chaves County jail after being charged with forging an $8,800 check. Arrested in Wichita Falls Texas after stepping from a private plane, Ward pleaded innocent before Justice of the Peace J C Jones. Bond set at $10,000. The check was made out to Ward and signed by D W Falls.
Lightning hit two 240 barrel tanks on Comanche Hill last night around 11.00 pm. The Speers Oil Producing Co battery suffered 340 barrels of crude lost and tanks valued at 2700 dollars.
Maj. Gen. Thomas R. Yancey assumed command of the VIII U. S. Army Corps yesterday, directing all Army reserve units in New Mexico and Texas from headquarters in Austin.
